About the Author
Marlene Wasserman - Dr Eve - is an experienced clinical sexologist and couple and sex therapist in private practice. She specialises in sexual medicine and forensic sexology and has a special interest in onco-sexology. The majority of her time is spent in her therapy room with couples - and individuals - on her couch. She teaches sexual medicine at the medical school of the University of Cape Town and regularly presents papers at international scientific meetings. She is a member of both the executive board and the Sexual Rights Committee of the World Association for Sexual Health (WAS), and a temporary adviser to the World Health Association (WHO). An award-winning writer, she has columns in many South African magazines such as Natural Medicine, Longevity, Psychologies, Sarie and Playboy. She also writes on request for many international and national magazines and newspapers, and has published in a number of academic journals. Even her bedtime reading revolves about her job: the Journal of Sexual Medicine. Her previous books include Dr Eve's Sex Book: A Guide for Young People.

The New Seduction of Cyber Infidelity

Online dating is one of those things that the Internet was made for: People trying to meet people for love and sex in the supposed privacy of their homes. Cyber Infidelity is a book by Dr Eve (Marlene Wasserman), based in Cape Town, South Africa. She's South Africa's answer to the American Dr Laura, especially given her regular radio talk shows.

We first met when I conducted my second survey about online dating and online sexuality in 2006.

Recently she sent me a copy of her book, Cyber Infidelity ISBN 978-0798171182. It's my pleasure to review this book.

Cyber Infidelity is very readable, perhaps because of the topic of infidelity which usually sparks curiosity across the gender lines. It's also a good read because of the personal stories it contains, which provide deep insight into the motivations why people choose to find lovers and sexual partners online in this day and age.

The first three chapters lay a very good base for modern relationships. The Internet has transformed the way we conduct ourselves not only in business but also in the most intimate spaces of our bedrooms. As a couples therapist, Dr Eve shares insights into the rapid changes in behaviour.

Chapter 5 describes the triple A engine: affordable, anonymous, accessible. This is the pivotal factors differentiating online infidelity from offline infidelity. You can say it's the difference between cheating before the Internet and after the Internet and mobile phones became so easily accessible.

Sometimes it feels like Dr Eve is encouraging the infidelity. On page 169 she reveals a shocking statistic: over 75% of relationships that begin through an affair end in divorce. The chapter on porn habits is eye-opening. A few surprises may be learned from the porn watching habits of women, which is not commonly discussed as the stigma sees porn as the problem of (lonely) men.

The stories in this book reminds me of those I first read in My Secret Garden. They are at once confessions, revelations and sometimes sad. They show what's missing from the relationships and why the myth of “settling down” is so unsatisfactory.

The topic of infidelity raises curiosity our own personal natures. To what extent are we still living in a monogamous society with the rise of the Internet, social media and mobile phones?

One of my favourite aphorisms in this book is that "shame and blame are the twin sisters of guilt." The Ashley Madison website is where the author collected much of her first hand accounts of cyber infidelity. The customers of this website are not ashamed to share their innermost fantasies. So do you blame them for choosing to engage in cyber infidelity, which many times does not lead to an offline meeting? [After this book was published, AshleyMadison.com was hacked and some shocking facts about the female users were released.]

One of the radical facts emerging from the book, is that women are much more sexually liberated than before the rise of the Internet.

There are few surprises in in the statistics because they are all from English speaking countries. Perhaps a sequel may include comparison with China and India, which together account for probably half the Internet users in the world, and vastly different cultural norms. It would be fascinating to evaluate how the Internet has changed the sexual behaviour of these nations.

rather call this cyber crime, than cyber infidelity!

With this book the author take you to the fine line regarding infidelity. It is scary to see how far people will go to satisfy their own LUST!

I will never ever just send a message to any person again, how innocent I may think it is without thinking of the consequence to the loved one of a specific person.

This is so sad that people feel the need to go outside the safety net of a relationship to make them feel good about themselves. My personal opinion is if you have the need for any kind of relationship outside your marriage/relationship then the writing is on the wall, it is time to quit.

THEREFOR THERE IS NO WAY THAT INFIDELITY CAN BE SEEN AS OKAY WITHIN THE MORAL CORE OF ANY SOCIETY. THERE WILL ALWAYS BE ANOTHER PERSON WHO WILL GET HURT even if the infidelity is only online and not physical, no innocent play in this game - only self love and LUST!

A real eye-opener and provides a lot of food for thought

Dr Eve blows open the lid on trends that are quietly and surreptitiously changing the way that relationships are managed. In fact the changes have already largely happened but the research and commentary is lagging behind the reality because of the taboo nature of a lot of the activity. Anyone who is in a long-term relationship (or would like to be in one) should read this book to be aware of the minefield that is the modern relationship. Highly recommended.

Enjoyed story. Hated certain characters.

I don't like to give this book a low rating because there are definitely things about it that I like. There was really just one element that ruined it for me.

First, I liked the creativity of the story. There are seemingly two unrelated story lines taking place throughout the book, but you know they must come together somehow. By the end of the book, the merging just begins, but it is still not fully apparent how it will all work together. Both story lines were creatively developed. The book didn't feel like a re-imagining of old themes to me. I enjoyed the continual intrigue.

Despite all of the things that I liked about the book, three characters ruined the experience for me. There are three archeologists on the trail of what may be the most significant discovery of all time about human prehistory. However, although they are apparently professional academics, they persistently behave like immature teenagers, pulling pranks on one another and hurling insults without end. Trish must ridicule and insult Jason at least ten times a day, yet his feelings still seem to be hurt every time ... and for some reason they are friends. This adolescent behavior was so consistent throughout the book with these three that it drove me bonkers. Someone was always telling someone else how stupid or fat they were, even in situations where there was imminent danger.

Sarah, the leader of the adolescent archeologists, became increasingly irrational toward the end of the book. She destroyed Mayan ruins, kicked in people's doors, and decided that dropping her pants was the best way to get someone's attention so that she could talk to him. She wondered if she might be addicted to adrenalin, but I think she might have been having a mental breakdown.

I apologize to the author for my scathing treatment of these particular characters, but I simply couldn't stand reading about them by the end of the book. Their behavior and mentality was not consistent with professional, educated adults. I did truly enjoy other aspects of the book though.

I will not read the next book simply because I cannot bear to deal with Sarah and her colleagues anymore. I hope this review will help other readers decide whether or not to read the book. I also hope the author will take this as constructive criticism and not just hurtful criticism.

Note to author: The word "whilst" is not used by Americans. Replace it with "while" when you are writing dialog for American characters.

So bad it's almost good

Why do I keep believing great reviews? The plot should have been a warning - human origins and dangerous asteroid. It's hard to find a single, complimentary thing to say about the book - a stinkeroo! It's all done so badly - characters, dialogue, description, sensible plot, quality of writing plus a complete lack of R & D on almost every subject. The author, an obvious reader of the King James Bible, uses the archaic term "whilst" (instead of "while") constantly. It did not lend gravitas to the writing. Absurdly, as the asteroid approaches, folks shop, order pizza, attend school, catch the latest episodes - no worries!

*** Plot Reveal (sorta) *** In 2017, a professor is placed in charge of saving mankind from a large asteroid arriving in 2040. Skip 23 years and...nothing has changed. Technology is circa 1998 - folks drive trucks, clunky cell phones, watch tv, read books, go shopping at the mall. Our heroine is convinced a race of advanced "giants" existed 500,000 years ago so she and her sidekicks jet around the world using an old object (that works by holding hands) to discover in hours what thousands missed for decades. The "archaeology" is absurd (instant finds, intact skeletons, wrong dating and preservation methods, etc) and why bother since those evil Catholics are conspiring to steal the evidence keeping the "truth" from mankind. (Who knows why.)

Meanwhile, professor has trouble from military/CIA folks - real shocker - so folks escape to yet another underground place, "Sanctuary". During the crash (a few paragraphs) China decides to nuke Japan and South Korea, effectively destroying her own economy. Add clunkers like hidden Mayan rooms (accessed by pulling a jewel on a wall) and a lame subplot of a home for the mentally challenged and it is without a doubt an unmitigated disaster. About the only survivalist / political cliche not present wa zombies but there is still book 2. My Grade - F

Fascinating story line and a cliff hanger ending.

I couldn't put it down, and was disappointed when it ended so abruptly. I try to avoid cliff hangers until I have the next book to continue, but got surprised by this one. Hoping I don't have to wait too long for book two.

Excellent literary history of between-the-wars Paris

Noel Riley Fitch may not know everything about the artists and writers of early to mid- twentieth century Paris, but she certainly comes close. Just as Sylvia Beach and her French counterpart Adrienne Monnier between them seemed to know all the English-speaking and French writers of Paris, respectively. Sylvia Beach owned Shakespeare and Company, an English language bookstore and Ms. Monnier, on the opposite side of rue de l'Odeon, owned La Maison des Amis des Livres. Sylvia Beach and the Lost Generation is an excellent biography of Ms. Beach which details her involvement with literary Paris, especially the time between the wars. If there is a very heavy emphasis on her involvement with James Joyce and her publishing the many editions of Ulysses, that was the reality of her life. And if Mr. Joyce comes across as a self-preoccupied schemer, who showed Sylvia Beach very little gratitude for all she did for him practically gratis, well, that was the reality of her life, too.

Paris between the two world wars was a fascinating place and Sylvia Beach was in the thick of it. As the author says in her introduction, "Sylvia Beach created a literary center that magnetically attracted artists from all over the world during what Archibald McLeish calls the `greatest period of literary and artistic innovation since the Renaissance." T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Andre Gide, Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Samuel Beckett, Leon Edel, Janet Flanner, Virgil Thompson, Paul Valery, and Thornton Wilder to name a few, were part of Shakespeare and Company in a real sense.

The full title of this book is Sylvia Beach and the Lost Generation: A History of Literary Paris in the Twenties & Thirties, and an excellent literary history it is. Highly recommended. By the way, for those who plan to visit Paris, check out Walks in Hemingway's Paris: A Guide to Paris for the Literary Traveler, by the same author.

Sylvia Beach and the Lost Generation

This is an ambitious and serious work, accessible in style, and packed with information in over four hundred pages. It has three main themes, clearly defined in the introduction.

The first is the love between Adrienne Monnier and Sylvia. The details of this, so we are told, 'were and are still little known' in 1983 when this book was first published. The second is her admiration for, and championship of, James Joyce. The third is her bookshop, Shakespeare and Company, which was a key feature of the literary scene in Paris between the two World Wars.

By far the most detail is provided on her professional relationship with Joyce. Her efforts to get Ulysses published and smuggled into America, her financial and personal efforts to support the author, and the amount of time and energy she invested, are the key theme of the book.

Naturally Sylvia knew all the other familiar literary figures of the time. Hemingway and Pound are frequently mentioned, as is Gertrude Stein.

As intimated in the introduction there is less to be said about more personal relationships. In a way this seems rather a pity. The anecdotal style and recurring references to various incidents along the way give the writing a rather disjointed feel. Inevitably there is also a certain sense of déja vu particularly for anyone familiar with biographies of Hemingway for example.

The strength and the weakness of the book is the amount of text devoted to James Joyce. Joyce attracts great, but not universal, enthusiasm. The man himself seems to have had more arrogance than charm. Depending on the side of this divide which the reader favours this book will firmly hold the attention or will, in places, rather pall.

WELL RESEARCHED - FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN OUR LITERATURE

This one has been around for some time now and it is not the worse for wear. For those interested in our literature and literary Paris during the 1920s and 1930s, then this is one of those "must reads" (I truely hate that term, but know of no better to describe the improtance of this work at this time). The author's research is absolutely miticulous and fills in many gaps in the story of this remarkable woman. Do be warned though. Many of the names of people mentioned here are rather obscure (at this day and time) for those not immersed in the literary world. This can make the work a bit difficult to follow at times. That being said, this is a wonderful work to read to cause many of these names to become less obscure than they are now...one more of the many reasons to read this work! The book covers some of the intimate details of Beach's relationship with friends and lovers that she so well side steps in her own account of this time. Recommend this one highly. Actually, you probably should purchase this one as it is one that is a good book for reference and one you will probably want to reread.

About the Author
Michael Sullivan is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Chicago State University where he taught for 35 years before retiring a few years ago. Dr. Sullivan is a member of American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, and the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges. He is President of Text and Academic Authors Association and represents that organization on the Authors Coalition of America, Mike has been writing textbooks in mathematics for over 30 years. He currently has 13c books in print: 3 texts with John Wiley & Sons and 10 with Prentice-Hall. Six of these titles are co-authored with his son, Michael Sullivan III. He has four children: Kathleen, who teaches college mathematics; Michael, who teaches college mathematics, Dan who is a Prentice-Hall sales representative, and Colleen, who teaches middle school mathematics. Nine grandchildren round out the family.

Abe Mizrahi enjoyed an active career in mathematics before his untimely passing in 2001. He received his doctorate in mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1965, and was a Professor of Mathematics at Indiana University Northwest. Dr. Mizrahi was a member of the Mathematics of Association of America, and wrote articles that explored topics in math education and the applications of mathematics to economics. Dr. Mizrahi served on many CUPM committees and was a panel member on the CUPM Committee on Applied mathematics in the Undergraduate Curriculum. Dr. Mizrahi was the recipient of many NSF grants and served as a consultant to a number of businesses and federal agencies.

I bought this book for my son's college Math class; and had a chance to look at it .Having tutored some students in Math previously, I've seen some text and workbooks- this textbook is written well, in easy to understand explanations, and examples.

The kindle version of the book is very convenient. It cost far less than the text book, works like a charm, and i was able to have the kindle version of the book pop up on my flashed phone, so i was able to always take it with me.

Great book, very helpful.

This little book is powerful. Malcolm Knowles seems to almost be suppressed today, if what he talks about in this book ever really caught on, there would be fewer schools and more real learning. See our Self-Directed Learning Page on Facebook, but first order this book, the price is only going to keep going up. I wish the publisher would come out with a new edition, there is a real need. for it.

Extraordinary trilogy

So carefully planned, it turns out, right from the first book. A woman who is shown both at her best and her (potential) worst; a man who wants her, but cannot admit it; another who gets her, but nearly loses her; and a third who lost her, can't allow himself to get her back and yet (in a sense) does anyway. All of this played out against a background of WW2, magic and 1940's secret weapons --- but never overdone. And at the end, you are left both happy and sad. Wonderful.

An excellent introduction to piracy worldwide.

Philip Gosse has written a thorough overview of worldwide piracy; concentrating, of course, in the Mediterranean and Caribbean, but including the Far East. Even three cases of female pirates are covered. The subject is described both in breadth and depth, with many "sea stories" included. The only drawback is that some famous pirates, like Jean Lafitte, receive little coverage.

One of the better books on piracy

This modern reprint of a 1932 classic is an invaluable history of piracy. This book, along with David Cordingly's "Under the Black Flag" and Daniel Defoe's "A General History of the Pyrates" (Defoe was writing as Captain Johnson), are the best volumes on piracy I have yet to read. Gosse's history is lively and comprehensive.

The author begins, “To write a complete history of piracy from its earliest days would be an impossible undertaking….What the following pages attempt to do is to show what conditions, geographical and social, preceded the rise of piracy, to trace its periodical rises and declines, its forms and fortunes, to depict the more outstanding members of its profession, and finally to show how national organization, backed by the steamship and the telegraph, brought it to an end.” The book has seventeen chapters, plus an Epilogue, divided into four main sections: “The Barbary Corsairs,” including the Barbarossas; “The Pirates of the North,” such as the Vikings, Hanseatics, and English Corsairs; “The Pirates of the West,” such as the Buccaneers of North America; and “The Pirates of the East,” from Africa, India, Arabia, Japan, China, and the Malay Archipelago.

Author Philip Gosse is identified as “an eminent authority on pirate lore and literature.” I picked The History of Piracy up in “The Pirates of the Caribbean” gift shop when we visited Disney World last year. It is well written, and the stories are told in a lively, informative, and comprehensive fashion. A few curse words are used, primarily in quotations. Even three cases of female pirates are covered. Some famous pirates, such as Blackbeard (Edward Teach) and Captain William Kidd are given their due, but others like Jean Lafitte are barely mentioned. The book will not appeal to everyone, but anybody interested in pirate history, or history in general for that matter, will enjoy it. There are seven Appendices, quoting documents from the days of “The Classical Pirates” of ancient Greece and Rome to a 1929 newspaper article on “Modern Chinese Pirates.” Also found in Dover’s reprint are seventeen black-and-white illustrations and four maps from the volume’s original publication.
