this book is a brilliant study of photography. the author is very well read and puts together a lot of the major thinking about the contemporary culture of news photography. I teach photography and this book was very helpful to me in my work in giving me a deeper understanding of the roles of journalism in shaping our world. I am gateful to the author.

Great novella!

Protective Instinct by Katie Reus is the perfect story for Ryan and Teresa. I really enjoy the entire Moon Shifter series with both novels and novellas. Reus is able to connect the overall storyline within the short stories. Protective Instinct was just as entertaining as the other books. There is the perfect blend of romance, suspense and paranormal aspects to the story. Once you open one of these books, you rarely close it without finishing. Reus writes in a way that pulls you in from the first page and won’t let you go until the end.

Ryan and Teresa have been dancing around the whole mating/bonding thing for a long time and it is driving Teresa insane. Ryan has his fears which Teresa understands in her head to a point but really thinks he can overcome them and tries everything she can do to do just that. Eventually she can’t think of anything else to tell or show him how serious she is about wanting to be his for the rest of their lives. She is tired of waiting on him. Of course, just then, disaster strikes and the pack has to move into action and all thoughts of romance are pushed to the side for Teresa and Ryan.

Reus handles this short story fantastically. The romance between Teresa and Ryan plays out very nicely and the passion and intimacy fits the story and characters well.The balance of suspense and romance is perfect and the appearance of other characters adds to the storyline. I love reading about past romances and learning about ones to come in future stories.

If you like paranormal romance, I really can’t say enough good things about Protective Instinct as a novella and the entire Moon Shifter series. I will continue to auto-read the Moon Shifter series books for as long as Reus writes them. They are highly recommended!

Good Addition to the series

3 1/2 Stars. This is a novella in Katie Reus' Moon Shifter Series and falls in right after book 5 Hunter Reborn. This novella centers around Teresa and Ryan who played a big role in Hunter Reborn and their relationship actually started in that book. You could read this as a stand alone but would recommend reading Hunter Reborn first. In Hunter Reborn Ryan started to accept how he felt about Teresa and let her know that he wanted to be with her. He had revealed his past and what had kept him from pursuing her in that book as well. In this book, Ryan is still holding back on bonding with Teresa. He is letting his past and what happened between his parents (his dad being just like him) effect his relationship with Teresa. He wants to be absolutely convinced that Teresa wants to bond with him so he holds back physically with her. Teresa is frustrated and upset because she knows she wants to be bonded to Ryan and wants him to trust her. She is finally so frustrated that she goes to help another single unmated wolf in the pack on an overnight trip. Ryan realizing this chases after her. When Teresa leaves the ranch she is put in danger from an enemy of the pack.

I just didn't buy Ryan pushing Teresa away so much considering he is an empathy. He should be able to tell that her feelings were real and solid. I kept thinking he has a gift that should let him understand her and feel that his decisions are hurting her. It was frustrating. I actually enjoyed reading more about Aldric and Natalie more.

This isn't my favorite shifter series but it is enjoyable.

Even Shifters have problems of love, especially when the alpha male is stubborn and pig-headed like Ryan. In the next installment of the Moon Shifter Series, “Protective instinct”, Katie Reus gives her ever-protective hero the fear of his life, as she throws his mate Theresa into danger.

Theresa and Ryan may have accepted their feelings for each other, but the stubborn alpha holds back the ultimate mating due to his painful past. Frustration leads to arguments and barriers and a revengeful vampire has Ryan rethinking his idiotic behavior of keeping Theresa at an arm’s length. A threat to Theresa’s life brings out Ryan’s protective instincts and the separation and fear of losing is mate gets his head out his rear to claim her forever.

Intense, steamy, and passionate, “Protective Instinct” is a short novella in the series that leaves us with the satisfaction of reading another charismatic story of Katie Reus’s creative and mesmerizing paranormal. And I’ve never been disappointed with her writing prowess, and she is a master at keeping her narration enchanting and captivating.

Very cool idea book

I have been a frustrated cartoonist since I was six. In my professional career, I have attempted to use cartoons to illustrate points in presentations and marketing pieces. This book gave me the pointers to make my doodles come to life with much more impact. It was well organized and brought into focus concepts that were evading my attempts to draw my own cartoons. The book made the "secrets" seem obvious and simple. This is a must have for anyone who wants their doodles to do more than just decorate the margins of their notes.

It really IS the Ultimate Character Design Book

This book is a five-star winner because it is packed with "how to draw" cartoons. There isn't a facial expression or posture or character that isn't covered. Moreover the illustrations are crystal clear. I love everything about the book. To my mind, it's perfect.

Julia, Julia, Julia! There is much to be desired for a Julia Press Simmons book! Sassy was something different opposed to Julia's other works. But her descriptiveness in her characters is at an all time high! Sassy was just that sassified...her vulnerability was put out there, her pain and her desires. Sassy became real to me as all Julia's characters do! She is just too awesome at bringing a scene into your nostrils to where I wanted to puke at the stenches of Sassy's sorrow and untidiness during her heartbreak! That's what a good book is... SASSY! Thanks JP...

It's been a while since I read a book by Me Simmons. Sassy is a fast paced love story that reminded me of why I enjoyed her books to begin with. This is the perfect tale of a catch-22 situation. I can't wait to see what other drama Julia Press Simmons is going to bring back to her readers.

Have you ever found yourself only to lose yourself all over again? Have you ever been so addicted to a man?

Sassy is looking for a new start with her new job. She is ready to take over the world and make her relationship work with Mike. She stumbles onto Vince and that is when the trouble starts.

Now that we have established Sassy and her life, we fast forward and find Sassy in an addicted state. Her mother, Wanda, has come to rescue her daughter. What she finds is not her daughter but a shell spent on alcohol and tears. She does what any mother would and brings her daughter into reality and finds out how she got into her funkdafied state.

Sassy starts her story. She realizes she is being taken advantage of by her current boyfriend Mike, who has been using her. She finally gets the courage to park him on the curb with the garbage. She is hurt but life goes on. She has her new job and a different outlook on life. She's making friends and then here comes Vince. Vince becomes a drug for Sassy and when it hits her this is why we find her in an addicted state to Vince.

Will Sassy get the courage to leave Vince? Will her addiction overtake her? Stay tuned is what we are going to have to do.

Four-star read for the work. It kept my attention and made me remember a time I was addicted. Thumbs up to JPS for giving me a memory back in story form.

A Must Have for your 1812 Book Collection

As a historian, I have the tendency to be a bit critical of historical novels and text books. As a scholar I want to see that the historical facts are accurate, but as an avid reader I want a book that is riveting. Joy Demarse was able to incorporate both of these skills within her novel. The historical facts regarding the Battle of Plattsburgh during the War of 1812 are very accurate. Her use of primary documents, including diary entries from families that lived and survived the invasion of the English in Plattsburgh NY, add such incredible details and insight. This novel clearly allows us to understand how life was during the War of 1812 in Plattsburgh, NY and how the local men and families contributed to the aid of the US Military.

However, the most incredible aspect of the novel is Ms. Demarse's way of weaving a historical story that will keep teens and adults alike sitting on the edge of their seat. I began reading this book while waiting for a return flight home. Once I began reading it, I could not put it down. I read it through my first flight, my next layover and then my final flight. I HAD to know what happened to these boys. I wanted to return to Plattsburgh and walk their nine day journey. This is an excellent novel and as a museum manager of the War of 1812 Museum I will highly suggest that anyone interested in the history of the War of 1812 and the Battle of Plattsburgh read this book. I also encourage all middle school to high school history teachers to include this novel in their curriculum when they are teaching about the War of 1812.

Historical novella sheds new light

A very fine job of factual reconstruction based on excellent research in primary and secondary sources. Aimed at the young adult market, the author's fictional overlay of imagination and intelligence make this historical novella a strongly recommended book for discerning HS, YA and older readers. It was highly refreshing to learn something new in such an easy to follow narrative. The underlying theme of "Nine Days a Soldier" has a universality that is rather profound

Godsend for the new caretaker

I was put into the role of medical decision maker without warning when my otherwise healthy mother fell down the stairs and broke her neck. I am grateful that she already had all the important legal documents I needed, advance medical directive and durable power of attorney, in place. So I had the power to make decisions, but not the knowledge. In meeting after meeting with helpful hospital staff and the person in charge of helping me file for Medicaid I felt overwhelmed by my lack of understanding of what the terms they were using really meant. Last night I bought this for Kindle and didn't go to bed until I had finished all the applicable chapters.

In the coming year she may need anything from living at a skilled nursing facility to in-home care, and thanks to this book I understand now what each type of care is called, what exactly that entails, how much to expect it to cost, how to find information on facilities, and how much help to expect in paying for it from insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid. The chapters on what Medicare and Medicaid do and don't cover based on marital status and assets were detailed yet totally understandable. This book has made a huge difference to me and I will be recommending it to my mother's siblings as well.

Barbara Appelbaum is one of the premier objects conservators in the United States. Practicing in New York, Appelbaum was trained at New York University and began her career at The Brooklyn Museum. The concepts of Conservation Treatment Methodology grew from that time; as the only objects conservator among paintings specialists, Appelbaum found herself having to provide the rationale for her treatment choices. The author treats objects from both museums and private individuals including artworks such as a Marcel DuChamps urinal. But Appelbaum's passion is the stuff of history - from George Washington's leather portfolio to a Marilyn Monroe dress. She relishes difficult and unusual conservation challenges-- gilded leather, embroidered and painted silk, and other unforgiving materials. The author is active in professional organizations. She publishes and lectures at seminars and meetings for conservators, architects and institutions. Her book Guide to Environmental Protection of Collections (1991) became a classic in the field and is still in use today.

Enormous contribution to the field

I am delighted to have this book. Barbara Appelbaum has thought through and presented many ideas I have met over the last 30 years as a conservator, but that no one before has put into this kind of focus. She demonstrates the kind of thinking that is critical to responsible care and treatment planning. Thanks you, Barbara, for giving us the benefits of what you have been doing and teaching all these years. This is an enormous contribution to the conservation field. The content is insightful and practical. The book should be read, owned and used as reference by everyone who owns or takes care of art objects.

A New Standard, A Great Read for Everyone

Barbara Appelbaum has written a magnificent treatise on a complex subject for all of us, expert and non-expert alike. This book needed to be written, was overdue in the art and decorative art worlds, and fortunately for all of us she took the time and effort to put her pen to paper. The result is an easy to read book, where she unravels the complex without skipping any of the important details. This is a talent that cannot be overstated, particularly in the case of conservation. Museum curators and conservators both need to read it, as the methodology of conservation treatment begins long before any hand is lifted to do the work, a concept she amply and ably deals with to great and useful effect. All collectors also would benefit tremendously by reading Appelbaum's book before dropping a piece off to be conserved or restored; the knowledge gained from this book will ensure the results are more satisfying. The methodology she lays out in the book quite simply sets a clear standard, one that needs to be integrated into any curriculum on conservation if it is not already. About the Author
Nancey Green Leigh is a Professor and PhD Program Director in the School of City and Regional Planning Program at the Georgia Institute of Technology. She is a Fellow of the American lnstitute of Certified Planners and Co-Editor of the Journal of Planning Education and Research. Leigh teaches, conducts research, and publishes in the areas of local economic development planning, urban and regional development, brownfield redevelopment, and sustainable urban industrial systems.She is the author of Stemming Middle Class Decline: The Challenge to Economic Development Planning, and coauthor (with Joan Fitzgerald) of Economic Revitalization: Cases and Strategies for City and Suburb. Some of the journals she has published in are Economic Development Quarterly, Journal of Planning Education and Research, Journal of the American Planning Association, Journal of Industrial Ecology, International Regional Science Review, Journal of Resource Conservation and Recycling, Growth and Change, Journal of Urban Technology, IEDC Economic Development Journal, and the Journal of Planning Literature. She obtained her B.A. in urban studies and a master's in regional planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a master's in economics and a Ph.D. in city and regional planning from the University of California at Berkeley. She is a former Woodrow Wilson Fellow and Regents Fellow of the University of California at Berkeley and past Vice President of the Association of The Collegiate Schools of Planning.

Dr. Edward J. Blakely is Professor of Urban Policy in the United States Study Centre at the University of Sydney, Australia. He has held academic positions in teaching, research, academic administration, and economic development policy for more than 30 years, including Dean of the Robert J. Milano Graduate School of Management and Urban Policy and Dean of the University of Southern California School of Policy, Planning, and Development. He is a leading scholar and practitioner in the fields of planning and local economic development. Dr. Blakely served as a policy adviser to the mayor of Oakland and adviser to the Los Angeles Public School District. He was appointed by President Clinton as Vice Chair of the Presidio Trust, where he played a key role in the development of the former army base into a profitable civic facility. He has served on the Board of Directors of the American Planning Association, the Nature Conservancy, and Fulbright Association. In January 2007, Dr. Blakely was appointed by the Mayor of New Orleans to head the recovery effort following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

Great for a reference book. Buy the older addition.

Very clear and concise, yet comprehensive enough to serve as a manual. Of all the books I've read in grad school (economic development/urban planning), this is one of the best and most useful books.

I doubt the "new edition" is any better, though. I would buy the older edition if I had to buy it again, which is significantly cheaper. It said "new content with social network analysis," but there is no index item for social network analysis and I haven't found it yet in the book.

The bible of local economic development planning

This is the bible of local economic development planning. This is the fifth edition. I have read the previous four edition and the information in this edition is worth the cost. I recommend it highly to all practitioners of economic development regardless of their years of practice. It is great information for those new to the profession as well as people like me with decades of experience.

Great planning tool for public administrators

I was renting the book for one semester, but I will buy it. It is very practical and if you are planning on working at local government level you will need it.
