I think it had great variety of activities that would boost peoples reading and comprehension skills to an advance level. Absolutely brilliant. Great exercises that you can practice and apply in a real situation. Handy Reference Helpful in my Doctoral Studies

This book serves as a handy reference for my Doctoral Research Studies courses at Brandman University. It was required reading, but I can't bring myself to give it a straight readthrough. I am disappointed that this title is not available in any edition on Kindle. I am happy to report however that this edition (the 7th) is working out just fine for me, even though the course requested we purchase the 8th edition. My classmates have the 8th edition and we have not noticed any difference between our books thus far. With that said, check with your instructor and see if you can purchase the 7th edition used like I did to save some money.

The text gives a nice overview of both qualitative and quantitative research methods, experimental and non-experimental designs. Key terms are fully explained. There are a few key pages I continue to refer back to. I have these marked with post its. I usually purchase all of my books through the Kindle store, but owning this edition is working out for me thus far.

Rosemary Goode is smart, funny, and sassy, but no one seems to notice. All anyone sees is her weight - all 200 pounds of it. She doesn't fit in at school, she finds herself getting made fun of by the popular Bluebirds, and the only boyfriend she'll ever have is Mr. Hershey, or Mr. M&M.

At the start of a new year, Rosemary finds herself disappointed. Santa just brought her an unwanted treadmill for Christmas and her Aunt Mary gave her tickets to a "Healing the Fat Girl Within" Conference. On top of that, Rosemary's mother has sneakily set up counseling sessions for weight loss.

After a meltdown at her mother's gossipy salon, Rosemary decides she is going to lose the weight - on her terms. Rosemary tries various methods to lose weight, but it's a slow process. When Rosemary's mother is diagnosed with cancer, the distance between them grows even more and Rosemary tries to keep from turning back to food. Things start to look up when Kyle Cox, the school's newest football star, starts to take a notice in Rosemary. But how can popular, good-looking Kyle ever like a girl like Rosemary? And how will Rosemary bridge the ever-growing gap between her and her mother?

ARTICHOKE'S HEART is one of those books I wanted to stay in bed on a rainy day with and never stop reading. The cover and storyline may make you think this is light chick-lit, but the plot digs much deeper and carries a wide range of emotions that are great for any mood.

Rosemary is a fantastic character and her growth throughout the book is realistic. I was cheering her on the whole way through and felt as though I was on the journey with her. I also have to admit I had a bit of a crush on Kyle while reading this book! Author Suzanne Supplee put so much into her characters; they felt real and I didn't want to leave them. The Southern setting added an extra dose of charm to the story. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author in the future!

A Book Everyone Should Read!

Wow. I was so incredibly blown away by Artichoke's Heart. I only wish I'd picked it up sooner. The one thing that stopped me from doing so was the fact it was about a "fat" girl losing weight and generally, I shy away from those books. I rarely find them to be realistic and since I relate to this subject very closely, it just aggravates me. But Artichoke's Heart by Suzanne Supplee did anything but that.

Rosemary Goode is probably the most realistic character I've read about. Yes, she's "fat" to some people but she also has an incredible personality. The way she thinks and sees other people from a "fat girls" perspective is something you don't ever really hear about but is easily understood, especially when you've been through a similar experience. For those who can't relate to the way she thinks, Artichoke's Heart would definitely be an eye-opener.

The way Supplee handled the weight issue was amazing. People who are skinny seem to think that losing weight is simple as putting it on and that you can just decide you aren't going to be fat anymore. Yeah, sorry, but it doesn't happen like that. Supplee brings truth to what really goes on in a fat girl's mind.

The romance portion of the novel was also well-written. I just wish there were more boys like Kyle in the world.

Truthfully, I wish that I could force everyone to read this novel. It blew me away and I'm positive I'm not the only one. So, if you're going out to be a book this weekend, buy this one. You won't regret it!

Heartwarming Story of a Southern "Big Girl"

Rosemary is sweet, funny, and is always helping out at her mom's beauty salon in small town, Tennessee. She isn't happy with herself, though- she wants to drop some of her 190 pounds. When a regular customer and friend has a heart attack related to obesity, Rosemary starts getting drastic in her efforts.
Rosemary's life is filled with women - the only male character in the book is her love interest. Her family consists of her mom, aunt and grandmother. Despite this, the characters in this book are humorously realistic, and I thought this was a great book on self-image and battling weight loss, especially for young adults. I especially love the friendship between Rosie and Kay-Kay, one of the most beautiful girls at school.

About the Author
Marko Kloos is a novelist, freelance writer, and unpaid manservant to two small children. He is a graduate of the Viable Paradise SF/F Writers' Workshop. Marko writes primarily science fiction and fantasy because he is a huge nerd and has been getting his genre fix at the library ever since he was old enough for his first library card. In the past, he has been a soldier, a bookseller, a freight dock worker, a tech support drone, and a corporate IT administrator. Echos of Heinlein and Huxley

This book is extremely readable and engaging. I finished it quickly and felt disappointed that it ended and I am hoping for this to grow into a series. The book is a classic "Hero's Journey" storyline, and I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed "Starship Troopers" and noted a lot of the differences. Instead of Heinlein's "Citizen/Civilian" political dynamic that led to an almost "utopia" found in the classic "Starship Troopers" we find the results of generational welfare taken to the logical conclusion as the base setting for "Terms of Enlistment." The grit, dirt, and ugliness of the socialist dole life remind me of Huxley's "Brave New World" in dealing with the underclass. But the book is not about economics or politics, those settings are only there to explain the rational of characters which the setting does admirably.

The mercenary attitude of the protagonist is refreshing, not gritty or jaded but honestly working hard to scramble up out of poverty. The action sequences are well written and manage to convey crappy orders that grunts execute because that is just how the system works.

Out the "self-publish" league

Fine SF novel. Money well spent. Good entertainment, engrossing and real. Better than second-tier work from folks like Silverberg or whoever. Solid, visual, no-fat writing. Great technical skill at describing action, and he makes the most of his strengths. Strictly mature professional, no self-indulgence or slack, no major false moves, quite a trick for a guy with no editor. I didn't notice the prose at all, which is the highest praise there is for guys whose names don't end in Vance or Plunkett. Three or four minor "continuity errors", but nothing story-critical. I was uncomfortable with how comfortable the characters were inflicting casualties on massively outgunned opponents, but combat is ugly stuff by nature and that's a matter of taste. And they get chewed up real good soon enough (loose end there, though). It's a bit episodic, like any military fiction -- the characters have to go where they're told, though a clever enough plotter could make that work to his advantage, I'm sure. High concept: SPACE MARINES SEINFELD!!!!!

It doesn't rise to the first rank: It doesn't rattle your head -- though chapter thirteen starts off pretty intense. Characterization isn't deep. Not a whole lot of detailed interior life or conflict, or anyway not much that stuck in my head. More than the Lensman novels, though! But none of Smith's vast lunatic sweep and grandeur, either. Tight, focused, practical, concrete. With that kind of thing, I'd like a little (I said little) more interior agony b.s. in the mix, or some weirder stuff that'd grab you by the nuts more, but if the author just gives us more of the same next time out, I'll happily buy that and gobble it up. He is who he is. Maybe blow up some bigger stuff. The author is very good at describing stuff blowing up and bad things happening without sounding amateurish or perfunctory. I'd like to see him wreck the s#¡ t out of some Iain-Banks-scale toys.

So that's the deal. Good old fashioned gripping readable military adventure SF, without any Dicksonian mystical twaddle. I'll re-up (HURR HURRR HURRRRR) for the sequel.

It's horrifying this doesn't have a publisher. It's a quality professional SF novel, better than 95% (UPDATE: 99%) of the field these days.

Two different stories and I only liked one of them

I started reading this novel and was amazed at how good it was. The storytelling was taut and realistic and I very much enjoyed it. I was drawn in by the main character and I was looking forward to what looked like it would be a Starship Troopers-style character evolution.
Then he kills a bunch of civilians in collateral damage (justifiably, I am not criticizing his actions, he had no choice) and suddenly he's in the space Navy with his girlfriend and then all character evolution stops dead in its tracks.
At that point, instead of an interesting and engrossing book that examines terrestrial politics, we get an incredibly UNrealistic alien invasion novel with no character advancement and cardboard cutouts as characters. I don't know why the author chose this path but it was very disappointing. If he had done this whole book with the POV character in the TA fighting on Earth, trying to trace down where the rioters in Detroit got military weapons, that would have been an awesome novel, particularly for a first timer. Instead, we got half an awesome novel and half a cheesy alien story.
Too bad. I would have given five stars to that OTHER novel...

Red-Hot Lovers always exist

I very much liked Neil Simon's three-act play 'Last of the Red-Hot Lovers' because this tragicomic play is also a psychological analysis of the middle class people in search of love, sex, security and happiness. The plot is Barney's attempts at extramarital affair. When he is 47, after 23 years of married life with three kids, he begins to look for someone new. Why ? because for the first time in his life he begins to think about dying. The thought of death becomes a part of his life. The only way out for him is new excitements and new hopes that will make his life more colorful. This play is certainly worth reading. Don't miss it !

I hate this misogynistic play

I really can't stand this play. We're supposed to feel sorry for selfish, ridiculous Barney, who says he loves his wife, yet is trying to have a one-afternoon stand in his mother's apartment, and with the most awful women. I actually felt sorry for the women, although I don't think that was Neil Simon's intention. I really don't care about Barney and his midlife crisis. Did he ever think that every single person on this earth who has time to think about it worries about their own mortality and not accomplishing anything in the time they have on the planet. But they don't consider a tacky 2-hour sexfest to be the accomplishment of a lifetime! At least I HOPE not. Never once does Barney consider anything but his need for a little pathetic excuse for excitement. What about his poor wife? What was supposed to happen to the woman he thinks is so wonderful if she finds out he was making it with her best friend? It's disgusting, Barney is a horrible character, and I can't believe this play worked for anybody even in the 1970's. The female characters are stereotypes, not real people (maneating Mrs. Robinson, flaky hippy chick and depressed Jewish lady). They're right out of "Love, American Style" except that was less bitter and funnier.

Meh.

It's thought of as a classic play by some, but I found it full of annoying tropes.

It can be funny, and quite a bit of it is tongue-in-cheek about how we can be ignorant of what's in front of us and a little over-privileged for our good (especially for the good of relationship stability), but I find the characters to be largely unsympathetic with no redeeming qualities or interesting bits to make up for the fact that they're unrelatable.

I like that the assignments were real life situations

I'm a user of Excel but this book showed me a lot of new tricks. It's clear step by step instructions. Each lesson builds on what you learn previously so the skills are reinforced as you go along. I like that the assignments were real life situations. I was able to take what I learn and immediately apply it in my job. I plan on purchasing Skills for Success Access 2013 next.

Intoxicating!

What a beautiful book this is! Gorgeous photographs, plus all the info you need to start making your own wine at home. And who knew that you could make Apple Wine, Kiwi Wine and other unusual fruit wines? I've tasted some of the creations by the author and they are delicious. A must read for anyone who loves fine wine! Five stars!
