The story ends with Dog confident that his talent is the most important of all, so, in fact, he is still "the best." As always, Cousins invigorates her cartoons with color and charm. Her splotches and whirls convey depth and movement. The simply drawn characters have a comic flair and, like Ladybug in her tutu, beguile upon first glance. He outruns Mole in a race, beats Goose in a digging contest, bests Ladybug in terms of size, and swims better than Donkey. Each time, he announces, “I win. I’m the best.” His friends feel sad until they realize that Mole’s the best digger, Duck’s the best swimmer, Donkey’s the biggest, and Ladybug can fly highest. Suddenly realizing that he has been “a silly SHOW-OFF” and mean to his friends, downcast Dog apologizes. After they reassure him that they value his friendship and admire his “beautiful fluffy ears,” his irrepressible bravado surges again. Dog’s simple, childlike narration moves the story forward while making the most of this distinctive character and his flip-flopping emotional state, from his thoughtless, heartless declarations of superiority to his glum realization that he has hurt his friends to his final exclamation about the supreme importance of fluffy ears. The book’s large format gives plenty of range for Cousins’ naive, expressive pencil-and-ink illustrations. From the exuberant text to the bold, colorful artwork, a joyous spirit pervades this picture book and its fallible yet lovable protagonist. This one is the best!

I love Lucy Cousins! Her books are always great for story time sharing because of the big bold pictures and her simple, beautiful stories. I'm the Best is all about a dog (in perfect rainbow plaid pants of course) who loves to brag. He is always telling his friends that he is better than they are at everything, not realizing that he is making them feel sad. The friends then tell him that they are the best at things too, and he finally understands how mean he has been. The friends forgive him and tell him they think he is the best too, and they share a nice hug. A great little story about the dangers of bragging and being a show off. But wait! You turn to the last page, and I'll be darn if that dog isn't up to his old bragging once again. Just when we thought he'd learned his lesson!

I know that final page is meant to be funny, but I wish the author had stopped with that last hug. The dog going back to his old habits just seems to take away from the message a bit. That was my only complaint about this really cute book. Ms. Cousins' illustrations are engaging and whimsical and I am once again amazed that she tells such a good story with so few words. A must have for any toddler or preschooler!

This shining tale of Dog, the critter who thought he was the best at everything, will make your youngster smile!

Dog smiled and danced around in his multicolored checkered shorts practically shouting to the world, "Hello, I'm Dog, and I'm the best." Dog had four friends, Ladybug, Mole, Goose, and Donkey. He really loved his friends, but he still considered himself to be the best. He was better than they were in so many ways. He could run faster than Mole and grinned as he left him in the dust. As Goose looked on and tried to dig a hole with his webbed feet Dog dug like crazy and claimed he was much better at digging. They probably weren't happy when he boasted, "I win. I'm the best."

Of course he claimed he was larger than Ladybug, who was just a little thing. When Dog and Donkey went for a swim, his dog paddle was much better than Donkey's awkward swimming. Dog was such a braggart that he claimed, of course, that he was better than everyone at everything. Very soon all his friends were feeling very sad because Dog outshone them at every turn. All of a sudden things began to look different when Mole started to dig a hole and was better at it than Dog. Was Dog really the best at everything? Would his friends teach him a lesson he wouldn't forget?

This shining tale of Dog, the critter who thought he was the best at everything, will make your youngster smile. There is always one in the crowd who could benefit by learning a bit of humility. This book is a gentle reminder that such a quality can go a long way and will resonate with many children. Of course this tale is quite humorous in spite of its more serious message and the peppy, colorful artwork meshes perfectly with the story. This dynamic tale would be a fun one to read and discuss during circle or story time. If you are a Lucy Cousins fan, you know what being the best is all about!

Simply the best

In this upbeat offering from Cousins, uber-competitive Dog is more than happy to inform his friends Ladybug, Mole, Goose and Donkey just who exactly is top dog. Dog can run faster than Mole, dig holes better than Goose, far outclasses Ladybug in terms of physical size, and can swim better than Donkey. Depressed at being outshone, Dog's friends all sit down to sulk until they realize that much like the game of rock-paper-scissors, they each have their own strengths: Mole can dig better than Dog, Goose can swim better, Donkey is the biggest of all of them, and Ladybug can fly, something that Dog can't do at all. Devastated, a weeping Dog realizes that he isn't the best after all and he tearily admits, "I'm mean to my friends." They reassure him that he has beautiful fluffy ears, which leaves Dog feeling like he's back on top again.

Clean backgrounds with plenty of white space makes the bold pencil-lined, bright watercolor illustrations really pop. Seeing the characters moods dip between glee, pride, dejection, disappointment and back again, with just a few simple lines is a testament to Cousin's skill as an illustrator. There's a child-like charm to the simple flowers, trees and sun that show up on a few of the pages. The inferred lesson of the book, about the perils of boasting, is delivered with a lot of humor and charm and never hits a didactic note. This funny story will suit children ages 2-5.

About the Author

Edward Spence is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics at Charles Sturt University, Canberra, Australia.

Brett Van Heekeren is a lecturer in Advertising and Course Co-ordinator for the BA Communication – Commercial Radio, in the School of Communication at Charles Sturt University, Bathurst, Australia.

The purpose of this book is to offer a critical examination, analysis, and evaluation of key ethical issues that arise in contemporary advertising practice. The book is primarily designed to identify, examine, and evaluate ethical issues that arise in the planning and execution of the advertising process: the process of the communication of advertising messages of persuasion directed at consumers and, as in the case of some types of noncommercial advertising, citizens. With this specific purpose in mind, the book is not designed to address business ethics issues that arise generally and, as a matter of course, within the internal organizational structures of professional institutions, including advertising institutions. Thus the ethical issues addressed in this book are primarily the ones that arise as a result of the planning, production, and communication of messages of persuasion by advertisers to consumers and citizens.

The method of analysis and evaluation employed in Advertising Ethics is primarily dialectical, in that it seeks to engage the reader in rational reflective dialogue concerning the various advertising strategies and practices that are of ethical concern. The ethical analysis is presented and conducted by way of rational arguments that seek to provide critical reflection on ethical issues that arise with regard to specific advertising strategies and practices in the hope that the reader will feel challenged to think and reflect about the ethical implications and consequences of those strategies and practices. The dialectical method employed throughout the book assumes no prior knowledge of ethical theory or advertising practice and is designed to build the analysis and evaluation of ethical issues that arise in advertising from the ground up, using only certain basic ethical principles that are explained and justified in Chapter 1.

In keeping with the dialectical methodology of the book, the assumed perspective for the examination of the advertisements described in the various case studies throughout the book, is that of a putative rational person: a reasonable person capable of using his or her own critical rational judgment in identifying and assessing the ethical issues that relate to those advertisements for himself or herself. Our own analytical judgments concerning the ethical issues pertaining to those advertisements are ones that can reasonably be ascribed to such a putative rational person.

To assist in the professional and thus practical contextualization of the ethical issues that arise in advertising, the book offers an exposition of the current advertising theory and practice that informs the various advertising strategies currently employed in the advertising industry. Moreover, the ethical analysis and the evaluation of the various ethical issues that follow the exposition of current adverting theory and practice are conducted by reference to actual case studies that assist in highlighting the ethical relevance and significance of those issues, as well as illustrating the practical application of the ethical analysis and evaluation with regard to those issues. Finally, the ethical analysis and evaluation for each relevant chapter is concluded by a summary of instrumental and ethical consequences that emanate either actually or potentially from the advertising strategy or practice under discussion. In a sense, the summaries of instrumental and ethical consequences can be viewed as "ethical balance sheets." Thus the dialectical structure of Advertising Ethics comprises four distinct but interrelated components:

The first part of the book (Chapters 1 and 2) provides an introductory account of how ethical principles and codes of ethics are relevant and applicable to professional practice in general and advertising practice in particular. Chapter 1 offers an account of ethical reasoning and ethical decision-making based on ethical principles that are, in turn, justified and supported by contemporary ethical theory. Chapter 2 offers an examination and discussion of codes of ethics relevant to the adverting industry and advertising practice.

The second part of the book (Chapter 3) offers a critical examination and discussion of the relationship of advertising to the community.

The third part (Chapters 4 through 8), which is the major section of the book, offers an account and critical analysis and evaluation of key strategies and practices in contemporary advertising ranging from the place of truth in advertising (Chapter 4); stereotyping (Chapter 5); endorsements and testimonials (Chapter 6); The Ethics of Space and Time (Chapter 7), which examines how advertising infiltrates and colonizes both private and public spatiotemporal spaces; and the digital explosion of advertising (Chapter 8), which examines the introduction and proliferation of digital modes of advertising and their ethical implications.

Finally, the fourth part (Chapter 9) discusses the possibility and desirability of ethical advertising and the way that ethical problems in advertising can and should be addressed and resolved by the advertisers and the advertising industry. The chapter also offers a critical examination and evaluation of the various professional regulation options available to the advertising industry. The preferred option is reflective and effective self-regulation, which is in keeping with our overall view that ethical conduct essentially comprises ethical self-regulation at the personal, organizational, professional or institutional, and communal or societal levels.

If, as Socrates claimed, "the unexamined life is not worth living," then it is the responsibility of all individuals to reflectively examine their oVkn lives at all levels and in all manifestations and to determine the best way to conduct their personal, familial, professional, and societal affairs within the parameters and constraints of ethical conduct that, in turn, necessitates an integrated comprehensive and consistent worldview that is good not only for the individual who holds and maintains such a worldview but also for the community at large as required by universal public morality (see Chapter 1).

About the Author
Don Keith is an award-winning broadcaster, a best-selling author, and has been a licensed amateur radio operator since 1961. He was first licensed as WN4BDW in 1961, earned his General class license later that year, and then became an Amateur Extra class licensee in the mid-1970s, changing the call sign to N4KC. He was twice named Billboard Magazine’s “Broadcast Personality of the Year,” won every major broadcast journalism award in his state from the Associated Press and United Press International, and was an on-air personality, journalist, station owner, program director, and manager in a broadcasting career that spanned over two decades. Don published his first novel, The Forever Season, in 1995. It has remained in print continuously since and was named “Fiction of the Year” by the Alabama Library Association. His more than two dozen other published works, fiction and non-fiction, cover such topics as NASCAR racing, broadcasting, college sports, submarines, biography, and World War II history. Don lives in Indian Springs, Alabama, with his wife, Charlene, has three grown children, and three grandchildren. He operates all the shortwave amateur radio bands as well as VHF and uses most modes, including CW, SSB, PSK31 and FM. He enjoys DXing, contesting, antenna experimenting, and just plain rag-chewing. Pretty good book on an often overlooked subject

I used this for my 473 Leadership and Decision Making class. A lot of the things in mentioned in this book are seen everyday by everyone but you don't really recognize it until you are made aware. This book will help you become aware of the leadership aspects you encounter daily. A lot of useful information, like giving you actual names you can use to describe a situation that you didn't even realize was important. Everything about our life is a studied and classified and this book just gives you another resource of knowledge about overlooked things. I would recommend that anyone read this even if you are just wanting to better yourself. It will help you recognize the negative and positive aspects of who you are and how you can change them.

Art and Science of Leadership

I read this text as a requirement for a College Course. I found the textbook was easy to read in regards to the type to paper used (non-glossy glare), the font size, and the moderate information printed on each page was acceptable. Unlike some textbooks that have small print and too much information printed onto high glare pages, which is totally annoying to me.

The information presented and cited throughout the text was very informational, and I gained understanding of Leadership vs. Management, and types of each. I will be keeping this textbook for future reference.

Book binding fell apart

The contents of this book is good, although there were more typos than I have seen in a text book. The construction of this book is terrible. Two large sections of the book broke apar from the binding. I wanted to return it but I have notes on some of the pages that I want to keep.

I have ordered many books from Amazon and never once over the years have I experienced anything like this.

You should either refund my money or send me a book that is not defective.

In 1962 George Martin reluctantly signed a young group called the Beatles to the EMI record label. Thus began his stint as record producer for one of the most groundbreaking bands in pop history. Martin, writing with freelancer Pearson, describes in detail the creative processes-both artistic and technical-that went into making one of the most acclaimed Beatles albums, the 1967 Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, "a musical fragmentation grenade, exploding with a force that is still being felt." Tracing each song on the record from its genesis in the mind of one of the Fab Four, Martin explains how each fragment or idea evolved, with input from the entire band and from the engineering team, into a final track, and how the album broke new ground. There are many (probably too many) books on the Beatles already, but this one is by someone closer professionally to the group than anyone else--George Martin, producer of all the Beatles' albums. With Pearson's help, Martin focuses on the making of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, the landmark 1967 album that--with its exotic instruments, innovative recording techniques, and sophisticated songwriting--opened new possibilities for rock music and also captured its era's zeitgeist like few works of any kind before or since. Amid a detailed, song-by-song account of the recording of "the virtuoso music collage that is Pepper," Martin recalls his first meeting with the Beatles at their 1962 audition, discusses the band's musical influences, traces its members' rapid progress from makers of simple pop songs to composers of intricate art music, and confirms or denies many established bits of Beatles lore. One of the best books ever written about the Beatles

This fascinating, thorough, and accurate book about the making of the Sgt. Pepper album is the U.S. edition of Martin's Summer Of Love. It's the same book: same text, same photos, different title. Martin did a tremendous job researching this book, combining his and others' enjoyable first-hand recollections about the making of the album with extensive research at the EMI studios, relistening to the session tapes (including the unreleased alternate takes), checking the detailed notes written on the original session sheets, and so on. (In contrast, for All You Need Is Ears all those years ago, he relied on his memory, and the results were much less complete.) Amazingly, this was the first Beatles book to reveal that Paul McCartney played lead guitar on the "Sgt. Pepper" title track (yes, he sure did), and also the first to thoroughly dispel the tired myth that "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" was "all John": it was a true cocomposition by John AND Paul (as John said himself in at least two interviews). It's refreshing to see a book like this that assumes the TRUTH will be "good enough" entertainment for any sensible reader. Martin, thankfully, simply ignores rock writers' relentless post-Lennon rewriting of Beatles history, which has magnified anything negative Lennon ever said about McCartney while ignoring anything positive (such as Lennon's praise of "When I'm Sixty-Four" to interviewer Anne Nightingale)... and has consistently seized on Lennon's MOST mistakenly exaggerated or misleading claims about his own role in the creation of songs, while "forgetting" about all the many times John happened to give Paul completely fair, due credit (such as his 1965 interview with Valerie Wilmer, in which he described "Ticket To Ride"'s melody as cowritten by McCartney). George Martin, who admired and liked both Lennon and McCartney, has no axe to grind about them, or the other two Beatles... and he finds the right balance of modesty and candor in describing his own important role in the creation of this album, too. The previously unseen session photos are a fine bonus. This book is a keeper.

A Treasure

I'm pretty surprised about the few people here who have actually bashed this book. As a big Beatle fan and one who's read tons of books about them, I don't recall any inconsistancy's in this book whatsoever. Though short, this is probably one of the most prized Beatle books in my collection. My only complaint is I wish George Martin would do the same thing he's done here with Sgt. Pepper and write books about the sessions for the White Album, Revolver and Abby Rd. : ) A treasure to own. A book to read and re-read over and over.

Musicians take note!

For fans of pop music history, and especially for those interested in recording science, this book is a must read. George Martin, the Beatles' producer, tells the detailed account of how the group's most famous album was created, from the beginning creative germs to the cover art.
For those in the recording industry, Martin's detailed explanations of how he created some of the now-famous effects on that album, at a time when recording science was still somewhat primitive, is quite interesting.
If you don't like the Beatles' music, you probably won't be able to sit through the sometimes technical recording talk, but anyone for whom the Beatles marked the culture of their youth should find it fascinating.
