Paradoxes of Learning: On Becoming An Individual in Society (Routledge Library Editions: Education), by Peter Jarvis

As more is discovered about the powerful impact of lifelong learning on adults, educators are changing their views about how, when and where we learn. Learning is no longer defined only in the context of formal educational settings but in social context as well – including families, the workplace, and religious and political groups. This book explores how learning is our lifetime quest to understand personal identity, purpose and meaning while conforming and adapting to the perceived and real confines of our paradoxical society.

The author examines the complex social experience of learning, revealing how culture, gender, race and other societal factors shape an individual’s identity and ability to function in relationships – the basis of all learning. He also discusses the difficult paradox of cultivating creative thinking and reflective action in a society that values the acquisition of degrees, certificates and titles over actual learning and growth.

Don't waste time.
By Renee
Awful!!!! I seldom give a two star but this one was extremely bad. First the story is a novella. A new story starts at 53%. There are so many issues... first typos, second inconsistency. One part she talks of damage to her flower bed by the stalker then later says she doesn't want them to find out where she lives by following a cab home. The H keeps doing stupid stuff like hitting a biker, following Cody to the other bikers home to "protect him". There is no depth to the characters and everything is rushed. The H is told that Cody is using her and a ladies man. When she tries to talk to him about past relationships he gets invasive leading you to believe he is hiding something and most likely using her and the books just ends... right there... no letting you know if he was or wasn't. In my mind this wasn't a HEA. The way it ended makes me think he was using her.

Started Out Good, Until I Realized There was No Plot...
By Andrea Grabowski
I started out really liking this book. I was drawn in right away by the writing and the description and comical first meeting of the two main characters. We’re introduced to the hero almost immediately as bad boy biker Cody Dallas of Dark Riders MC comes to Mariah’s aid when her car breaks down in a bad neighborhood. Our heroine, lounge singer Mariah, promptly calls the cops on him because she’s afraid that Cody may be associated with the leader of the Robinson Street MC, who has been aggressively stalking her. Cody wasn’t amused, but he got over it.
I like these two characters. Cody can be a bit moody at times, but he’s also sweet and has a good sense of humor. Mariah makes some stupid decisions that leave you rolling your eyes, but I like that she’s not a damsel in distress. While she’s afraid of her stalker and his gang (and rightfully so), she’s not afraid to stand up to them either. Honestly, she’s even a bit too bold at times. I mean, when a biker gang is stalking you, destroying your property, sabotaging your car and attacking your friends… It’s probably not a bright idea to slap one of them. It’s probably an even worse idea to try and spread a lie about one’s *ahem* performance issues.
On that note, it’s probably not the best idea to continue playing at biker bars either. I understand not wanting to buckle under their intimidation tactics, but when a restraining order can’t even help you, maybe it’s time to remove yourself from the situation as much as possible. Just a thought.
Anyway, I liked the chemistry between these two and often found myself grinning at their lighthearted banter and sexual innuendos. Though he barely knows her, Cody wastes no time in trying to protect Mariah. She quickly learns that there’s a gentleman behind Cody’s tough exterior and he discovers that Mariah isn’t quite the good girl that he thought she was. Their relationship kept me engaged and I really wanted to see where it would go… Unfortunately, I soon realized that this really wasn’t going anywhere.
So, here are my issues…

1) There wasn’t much of a plot. Mariah kept getting stalked and sabotaged. Cody kept coming to her rescue (with a response time that puts 911 to shame). Random bikers kept showing up. Fights kept breaking out. Round and round we went. This story started out so well, but I kept waiting for there to be some sort of climax (aside from the ones our hero and heroine kept having) and there was none. To top it off, the book just ended abruptly and I found myself feeling completely unfulfilled.
2) In the description of this book, it reads: “However, Mariah learns that Cody’s club, the Black Riders, are major rivals of Nelson’s very powerful club. When she hears Cody is a player with the ladies and his romantic courtship is just one play of many to rule the streets of Baltimore, she’s devastated.” First of all, the name of Cody’s club is Dark Riders, not Black Riders. Aside from the fact that I don’t know how they managed to screw the name up the description, I’m baffled by this since the series is called Black Riders MC. Maybe the name of the series was changed because of a copyright issue? No clue. Secondly, the conflict mentioned here lasts literally one chapter. That’s it. In fact, all of the misunderstandings between Cody and Mariah are put to rest in a snap.
3) The cops show up a few times and they seem so… Robotic? I don’t know. The interactions were just awkward. Then one of the cops said to her, “I’ll look into the reports, but what I’m getting a sense of is, wherever you go, ma’am, drama isn’t too far.” This aggravated me. All of her police interactions are the result of the Robinson Street MC, an outlaw biker gang, and she has a restraining order against the leader, Nelson. One that he keeps ignoring. I’m sure the entire police force knows who this man is and I find it hard to believe that any of these officers would blatantly blame the victim.
4) Cody and his gang went after Nelson. Mariah chased after him because she wanted to “protect him.” Sweetheart, he’s in a biker gang. He went after this man WITH his gang… What could you alone have possibly done to “protect” him from the man that you can’t even protect yourself from? Heroines often make stupid decisions like this in books, but this especially irritated me because initially, Mariah seemed to have more of a head on her shoulders. Even if she was still playing at biker bars while being threatened by bikers… I mean, even if I think it’s stupid, I can respect not wanting to let a crazy stalker control your life. I can’t respect making an outlandishly stupid move like showing up to a biker brawl in a cab, unarmed, to hide in the bushes.
5) Typos. There were quite a few typos. Some were obvious and others just left me confused. A few times I questioned if maybe the author was from another country because a phrase sounded strange or I couldn’t understand what something was supposed to mean. I haven’t been able to find any sort of biography on her, but I’m going to assume that she’s from the US since this takes place in Baltimore. In this case, I’m going to assume my confusion was the result of poor proof reading. I can forgive a typo here and there, but it’s frustrating when it starts to distract me from the story.

I’m somewhat tempted to read the next book simply because I do like the characters, but I’m not so sure that I want to waste my money on another book that may lack any sort of plot. I’m going to add that I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review, but it’s kind of pointless being that the book is free anyway…

this book was a very big disappointment.
By P. Meyer
I really dont like writing bad reviews at all but this book was a very big disappointment. When i ordered it i was all excited to read it and add it to my vast collection of books. I was all like wow the cover looks amazing and it sounds like a really good book.

This book is really 2 short stories, filled with so many typos at times its hard to figure out what the author is trying to say, and then the story leaves off with nothing finished that it started and starts a whole new story. The characters majority of the time dont make sense in their decisions, but the sex scenes are okay for the most part but lacking compared to other books in this genre there was no real flow to the story and no depth to the characters. Its not engaging and its hard to keep focused on it just for the sake of finishing it like i did.

I received this product for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion and review.

"As a writer, Breytenbach has the gift of being able to descend effortlessly into the Africa of the poetic unconscious and return with the rhythm and the words, the words in the rhythm, that give life." -- J.M. Coetzee, New York Review of Books

"[Frankétienne's] work can speak to the most intellectual person in the society as well as the most humble. It's a very generous kind of genius he has, one I can't imagine Haitian literature ever existing without." -- Edwidge Danticat

sized like its predecessor

This is volume II of a series. Volume I is reviewed elsewhere.
Imagine Africa, volumes I and II

In, say, 2007, a group of artists, authors, and intellectuals gathered at the Goree Institute in Dakar, Senegal, to discuss and reflect. They wanted to create a vehicle for a dynamic vision of the African continent. This ongoing discussion (and others) can be viewed at [...]. One of the first manifestations of this spirit was a small book 6” tall and 8” long, a kind of giant postcard. The book was 232 pages and produced by a collective called Pirogue, a creative expression of the Goree Institute. A website was established and a book, introduced by Breyten Breytenbach, was published in 2011, and titled imagine africa; the artwork on the cover features 3 figures in color, 2 upright and the righthand one bent at the waist. The Pirogue Collective no longer has a website and the first publisher no longer exists or has morphed into the Archipelago Press which can be contacted at[...]. imagine africa II, sized like its predecessor, was published in 2014 and introduced by Georges Lory. The artwork on its cover shows 3 panels in color primarily of faces. The books are copyrighted by an organization called “Island Position.”
Each volume contains prose, poetry and artwork. Each work seeks to represent all parts of Africa, and works not originally in English are translated side-by-side with the original. Several of the writers are widely known, and readers seeking a wider breadth should use these volumes to discover writers previously unknown to them. Some pieces are long (20+ pages, some are short). Both books contain treasures. Volume II is a little more cosmopolitan than volume I and has fewer "so this is Africa" essays. Both volumes are extraordinary.

A wide view to African writing
By Susan Drees
Imagine Africa is an exciting collection of writing---essays, poems, short fiction, collected oral stories---all reflecting the greater African tradition. There are calls to arms, elegies for loss, looks to the future, works of politics and stories of more personal life. Everything is marked by the African continent, even those stories that reflect the diaspora to the countries of the Caribbean.

Most of these authors are new to me and I appreciate the brief biographies provided which often list other titles to pursue. Most of these works were not written in English and full information re the translators is also provided. The material is shown in its original language, then in English. This might be Africaan, French, Arabic, Dutch or a combination. International readers can therefore possibly read in their own language.

I have been attempting to read more African fiction but this book has opened my eyes to a wider world of African writing that I must pursue if I hope to understand that huge area of the world.

Highly recommended as a primer on African writing.

A copy of this book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley for the purpose of an honest review.

Practical Multiscaling, by Jacob Fish

Practical Multiscaling covers fundamental modelling techniques aimed at bridging diverse temporal and spatial scales ranging from the atomic level to a full-scale product level. It focuses on practical multiscale methods that account for fine-scale (material) details but do not require their precise resolution. The text material evolved from over 20 years of teaching experience at Rensselaer and Columbia University, as well as from practical experience gained in the application of multiscale software.

This book comprehensively covers theory and implementation, providing a detailed exposition of the state-of-the-art multiscale theories and their insertion into conventional (single-scale) finite element code architecture. The robustness and design aspects of multiscale methods are also emphasised, which is accomplished via four building blocks: upscaling of information, systematic reduction of information, characterization of information utilizing experimental data, and material optimization. To ensure the reader gains hands-on experience, a companion website hosting a lite version of the multiscale design software (MDS-Lite) is available.

Key features:

  • Combines fundamental theory and practical methods of multiscale modelling
  • Covers the state-of-the-art multiscale theories and examines their practical usability in design
  • Covers applications of multiscale methods
  • Accompanied by a continuously updated website hosting the multiscale design software
  • Illustrated with colour images

Practical Multiscaling is an ideal textbook for graduate students studying multiscale science and engineering. It is also a must-have reference for government laboratories, researchers and practitioners in civil, aerospace, pharmaceutical, electronics, and automotive industries, and commercial software vendors.
