An Enlightening Read

In her book, Katrina challenges many of the ways in which Tarot readers work with the cards and their clients. She is a strong advocate for a counselling based approach which involves `following' the client, rather than `leading' the client, and being descriptive rather than prescriptive. Let me explain...

`Leading' the client means telling your client what you see in the cards and `leading' your client around the Tarot reading. `Following' the client, on the other hand, means creating the space for your client to interpret the cards and to pick up on the messages that are meant for them. For example, you might draw the Four of Swords. Instead of explaining what this card signifies, you invite your client to give their first impressions of the card and build the reading from there, mirroring and working with the client's personally derived insights and interpretations.

It kind of reminded me of a story I heard where a Tarot reader was set up in a gypsy-style tent and would bring people in, draw a card, and spend the rest of the reading getting the client to interpret the card!

That said, it's not that black-and-white, as is made clear by Katrina. There is still room, as the reader, to provide profound insight, it is just in the sense that it is building from what the client initially sees. For example, the reading might wrap up with the reader then connecting the client's first impressions with the goals and issues that were stated at the beginning of the reading. Thus, the reader adds value by closing the loop and bringing it all together for the client.

Katrina also contrasts descriptive and prescriptive reading styles. Prescriptive reading is where you interpret a card and tell your client what is going to happen or what they must do. The Four of Swords again - "This card is telling you to rest and restore your energy because there are going to be more challenges ahead."

Descriptive reading on the other hand is where you will simply describe what is in the card. Four of Swords - "We see a man lying here, hands in prayer position, in full armour." There are no assumptions or conclusions made, no advice given, no future told. It offers up another invitation for the client to then make linkages between what is seen and what is intuitively known for them. "Oh, that looks like me doing yoga. Yeah, I feel great when I do yoga. Maybe I need to do more of it."

Katrina makes her preferences quite clear:

"I have no interest in predicting the future or telling what decision to make. I believe that disempowers clients and their relationship to their life's journey. I'm looking for guidance that comes from the clients, through their awareness, conscious or subconscious, which knows where they are on their journey and what step is next."

Katrina talks about power in a Tarot reading and who ultimately holds the power, based on the style of reading given. When the Tarot reader prescribes the action or the decision, they hold the power. They are the ones who are right or wrong. When the client decides their own path, they hold the power. It becomes more about their insights and change process, rather than the reader's. "Whose Tarot reading is it anyway?" asks Katrina.

Overall, Transformative Tarot Counselling is a very well written book that presents its ideas and processes in a very clear and smart way. I would recommend this book to experienced Tarot readers who are open to exploring new ways of reading Tarot and engaging with clients. I personally appreciated the opportunity to learn more about Katrina's style and evaluate how I might integrate some of her techniques into my own reading style. And you don't have to subscribe to every one of Katrina's philosophies or approaches to get value from this book.

I would especially recommend this book if you are a Tarot reader who is interested in how you can conduct interactive dialogues with your clients in ways that will engage them in the reading and that will open them up to their own, personal insights. And I would recommend it for those readers who are more naturally inclined to a counselling style of Tarot reading.

Little gem of a book!

In Katrina Wynne's "An Introduction to Transformative Tarot Counseling", the author shares her unique style of tarot reading. Like a counseling session, her style is interactive, combining her insights with the clients own perception of the meaning of the cards. This brings a more personal and deeper meaning to the reading. She tries to "follow" as opposed to "lead" the client to open up their own intuitive relationship with the tarot. Ms. Wynne supports the client and guides them to discovering their own wisdom to help make wanted changes in their lives.

I really enjoyed this little book, especially the chapter on sample readings. Ms. Wynne describes her technique of doing a reading, then walks us through two readings for actual clients. Its exciting to read about this process in action. There is also a step by step checklist included, so you can try it yourself!

Good things come in small packages! Highly recommended!

The Role of the Tarot Reader

Wynne has crammed a wealth of information into an 81 page book! She addresses the transformative aspect of Tarot reading, and the differences between leading a client (essentially interpreting the cards for them) and following a client (essentially guiding them through their process as they interpret the cards for themselves). She discusses things like what exactly transformative counseling is, the art and magic of change, the four stages of magic in a reading, and much more.

Along the way we also read about Jung and the Shadow, the journey of individuation, what skills are needed in transformative counseling, and the responsibilities and ethics involved in being a Tarot reader.

Throughout the book examples are presented, which makes the material presented very easy to assimilate. At the end of the book are sample readings, and a flow chart for the process of Transformative Tarot Counseling.

I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to read with the Tarot (or with any divination modality)!

About the Author

Roger Walsh, MD is Professor of Psychiatry, Philosophy, and Anthropology at the University of California at Irvine. Charles S. Grob, MD is Director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the UCLA School of Medicine. Dr. Grob is the editor of Hallucinogens: A Reader and is a founding board member of the Heffter Research Institute, which is devoted to fostering and funding research on psychedelics.

A Psychedelic Resource for Every Library

If I were to teach a course about psychedelics, the first book I would have my students read is Higher Wisdom. Edited by Roger Walsh and Charles Grob, this gem of a book provides in-depth interviews with 14 psychedelic luminaries. Collectively, their published books, papers, lectures, and research reports would take up a significant amount of shelf space.

Fortunately for those of us who don't have the time to read through such a treasure trove of information, Grob and Walsh have distilled the pure essence of the work of these elders into a series of remarkable interviews. To be honest, I wasn't expecting to be carried away by this book, because I thought I already knew a lot about almost everyone the editors interviewed. I was wrong. Before I knew it, I lost track of time and was transported back to the days when incredible breakthroughs were being made by these pioneers of consciousness exploration.

Although the interviews are arranged under the general categories of research, psychotherapy, culture & consciousness, and religious implications, I didn't read it front to back. Instead, I began by first reading the interviews of people I knew the best. As I read, I quickly became aware of what a valuable resource I was holding in my hands. Here in a single volume were the "headlines" and best stories of some people whose work will one day be seen as the bedrock of all future psychedelic studies.

Higher Wisdom works on several levels. Psychedelic researchers and explorers may find in it clues to puzzles they have yet to solve. Additionally, it is a work of history that pulls together the stories of a small group of people, largely unknown to most of the world, who made breakthroughs in consciousness research that are for the most part unparalleled today. In addition to the interviews, the editors, along with Gary Bravo, have written several short essays that pull these disparate stories together, placing the work of these eminent elders into a focused historical context. Another useful feature the editors included is an index split in two parts, a Name Index and a Subject Index. While this may seem like a trivial matter, it is a nice touch that many will appreciate.

The split index reveals the interconnections among this small band of researchers, as well as illuminates the influence of a few pioneers who had died before these interviews took place. I like to think of them as ghosts who continue to look over the shoulders of these early explorers. Interestingly, some of the ghosts have more index entries than the subjects of the interviews, and they don't all come across in the most positive light, as these very candid conversations reveal.

As to the appropriateness of the title, Higher Wisdom, consider this thought from Myron Stolaroff: "Ultimately, true liberation in the Buddhist sense is reaching wholeness, where you are totally at peace and intimate with everything that exists. If you leave out EVEN ONE person, you've left out part of yourself; you can't be really whole until you've absolutely accepted EVERY living creature."

The emphasis in that quote was added by me . . . and for me. It is something I am still struggling to put into practice. My bet is that you will also find a great deal of wisdom in this fine little book. I highly recommend it.

Great interviewbook with mindexpanded pioneers

This thoughtprovoking and beautiful book presents interviews with some of the people who were pioneers in the (at that time legal) research into psychedelics. Most of them holding academic degrees and the finest credentials. And almost all of them having experienced a profound and lasting change in their outlook on the world, towards an appreciation of our basic spiritual nature.

Amongst the interviewed are giants like Stanislav Grof,Ram Dass and Albert Hofman, and as always it's a great treat to read their words of wisdom. But there is certainly also very fine entries by perhaps lesser known figures like the fine Gary Fisher, who talks at lenght about the importance of sustaining your druginspired insights with regular spiritual practice.

Interestingly enough the two with the greatest mainstream credentials: the anthropologist Peter Furst and the scholar of Religion Huston Smith seem two be the ones with least to contribute. Smith obviously not realizing that he didn't have the courage (and grace) to take the final jump when he came close to the abyss of the Beyond. A jump most of the others seem to have taken.

All 14 come across as healthy, strong, integrated individuals, in themselves good arguments for the lasting benefit of controlled and sincere use of mindexpanding substances.

The great villain is of course the notorious Timothy Leary, the 'hero' of my youth, but today it's easy to see how much damage his immature messianic attitude caused. Not least to a lot of unprepared young people.
But he also gave the authorities the perfect excuse to treat psychedelics like any other drug, an attitude the medias unfortunately has adopted ever since, making it very hard to hope that the religious/spiritual possibilities of these drugs will be recognized and utilized in a positive way. Although they could actually make the world a whole lot better and point people towards true and spiritual values.

All in all a well produced and presented book and a joyous, uplifting read , sad though that ignorance prevales the way it does concerning this subject.

This book certainly lives up to it's title as a source of "Higher Wisdom".

How it all began

Roger Walsh and Charles Grob have edited a fine text concerning the impact of psychedelics. It is a very important and interesting book in this field. It is a book detailing how psychedelics became an intensely studied topic in psychiatry and psychology. Beginning with the synthesis of LSD by Albert Hofmann, its intial use was to enable psychiatrists to experience a temporary psychosis first hand. This would let them have greater understanding of the phenomenological experience of their patients. Yet LSD and other psychedelics were soon discovered to be valuable treatment modalities in psychotherapy by themselves, particularly in deconstructing certain defense mechanisms. The elders who participated in this book, were very sincere and responsible in their use of psychedelics. They did their work under controlled conditions that would be therapeutic to those ingesting the drug. This is not a book about the recreational use fo psychedelics but their therapeutic, even spiritual use.

This is a must read book for all individuals interested in learning about the value of these drugs beyond recreational use. I had no idea concerning this topic other than a dislike for 'hippies' who used the drugs and termed me and my friends baby killers for going to Vietnam. The book greatly expanded my understanding of the time and the real benefits surrounding psychedelics. The editors do a fine job of condensing the interviews to make the book extremely readable. I give it 5 stars.

About the Author
Sigmund Heinz Landau was born in Transylvania in 1920. After the war Landau moved to England, where he died in 1998.

Hell on earth, in the wild, wild, East.

Back in the 90's, a few paragraphs were included in Russ Schneider's book "Gotterdammerung 1945," from Heinz Landau's book which perked my interest in someday obtaining it. But the rare times I could locate a copy, it was always priced too high. Now that I have a cheaper paperback edition, it was worth the wait & was a good read. Landau saw extensive combat action with the Waffen SS as a Roumanian volunteer from ethnic German extraction. The ethnic Germans & Roumanians in that country absolutely loathed each other, & few Germans wanted to serve in the Roumanian army, due to the persecution & sometimes murder of Germans in Roumania before the war, so when war broke out with the USSR, many joined the Wehrmact & Waffen SS. The Roumanians fought treacherously during the war, as did the Italians. They would later switch sides & fight with the Red Army in 1944, causing the loss of an entire German army. Landau describes one battle, where the attackers were entirely Roumanians serving the Red Army. He & his comrades were so enraged, they beat back the assault with few Roumanian survivors, with such savagery, even the Russians were astounded by the losses! Heinz was sickened by the monstrous atrocities committed by the Red Army against Hungarian & German civilians, especially the mass rape of women. He & his comrades would execute with a bullet in the head, all Red rapists who fell into their hands alive. Heinz personally destroyed several Soviet tanks with Panzerfaust bazookas, as did many of his comrades in an anti-tank company with their PAK-40 anti-tank guns, or in close combat with hand held weapons. He was very lucky to have survived the war with all the injuries he suffered, & we are very fortunate to have his written account of his experiences today. I highly recommend this book.

An excellent and moving account of personal war experiences by an ethnic German Waffen SS soldier of WWII

This is a book which tells an excellent and moving story of personal war experiences by an East European ethnic German Waffen SS soldier of WWII. I am a huge fan of all WWII stories and have bought a dozen of war memory books by former German soldiers from amazon, but due to limits of time and inertia caused by daily work and chores, many of them have remain unread on my book shelf, which reminds me of an old saying: “You don’t read a book unless it is a borrowed one.” During the passing summer vacation, I spent sections of my hard-earned free time for a few days on reading the book continually and finished it from the first page to the last.

I shall honestly say that it is really a superb book full of interesting and heart-touching facts and anecdotes of World War II about the writer, a former East European ethnic German Waffen SS soldier and his family relatives, friends, and people having ever played notable roles in his life. It helps unfold a vivid picture of the ethnic Germans and Hungarians living in post WWI Romania, of those involved in WWII and the subsequent ethnic persecution and cleansing of them, their accounts of travails, ordeals, and brave struggles amid chaos and afflictions, all forming a continuum of historical vicissitudes throughout the regions in the particular context of time.

The author lays emphasis on the three major parts, namely, his war fighting experiences, his views on the conduct of German authorities towards people of occupied places in the high tide of German power, and the facts and eye witnesses of the Soviet brutality on German and other East European lands in the wake of the defeat of Nazi Germany. The war fighting in the Eastern theatre against the Soviet behemoth is truly a hardy and gritty undertaking, extremely exciting but enormously dangerous. The author Mr. Landau and his comrades fought so valorously and tenaciously against great odds and he personally had so many narrow escapes from the grip of death while his less fortunate friends and comrades fell down to earth one after another and often died grisly deaths on the merciless battlegrounds. The author is not a “reeducated” (read brainwashed) hater of Hitler and National Socialist Germany even though he did express his candid and critical view of some cocky and callous Nazi officials with their crass and ham-handed treatment of peoples of occupied countries which in my opinion is mostly fair and objective and not lost in context and proportion thus never appears as blind and sweeping accusations as we sometimes see in some other pathetic and guilt-laden memoirs by former German military men.

The author’s descriptions of the utterly brutal, dishonorable, and inhumane conducts of Soviet army and its East European cohorts against German soldiers and civilians alike, many from his own personal experiences and eye witnesses look quite real and credible. Again, he maintains an factual and non-emotional tone in relating the Soviet way by not only revealing such gruesome atrocities but also giving credit and even gratitude to some kind elements of Soviet military and civilians when deserved from which readers can see his fair and balanced mind. On the preciously humane and benign side of the victors, he particularly renders his heartfelt thanks and praises to the English military and civil personnel for their generosity and assistance which according to him, not only saved his life, but also his sanity and helped put him back into a peaceful and civilize post-war life.

The author’s writing style is one that really flows smoothly which makes this book very readable and a truly enjoyable page-turner. He seems quite a smart guy with great language and survival skills. Born an ethnic German he naturally speaks German as his mother tongue. As a former Romanian citizen, he speaks Romanian too. He also speaks good Hungarian language, plus his quick learning and masterful use of English later, one can’t help admiring his remarkable linguistic talent. Furthermore, in the book the author also shows his concise, insightful, and often trenchant observations on many aspects of war and life in the tumultuous years, which are often sprinkled with witty and humorous remarks, and are manifest in the three major parts mentioned in the previous two paragraphs that form the central thematic line throughout the book. As it turns out, the following are some interesting and thought-provoking tidbits in which I felt most deeply impressed:

1. Foreword, page IX, the introduction of Transylvanian-Saxons, their outstanding talent and abilities in building a well developed civil life.
2. Chapter 5, page 51, the three-line paragraph that summarize the Russian war-time mentality and behavior (ruthless and resilient in fight, brutal and merciless in victory, cowardly and abject in defeat) in succinct, accurate and unapologetically poignant words.
3. Chapter 11, page 84, 85, the vivid and impactful description of scenes of the war fighting against a ruthless enemy from an disadvantaged position.
4. Chapter 13, page 96, the sober and graphic descriptions of the unbelievably cruel Russian massacre and mutilation of German soldiers and the author’s indignant feeling and thoughts.
5. Chapter 14, page 107, 108, the eye witness accounts of the brutal fighting in the West front against the allies in a desperate situation; Page 120, descriptions of the saving by the author and his comrades of a German woman from being gang raped by Russian soldiers in war devastated Berlin; Page 126, paragraph 2, the author’s searing condemnation of the Russians and their grotesque brutalities with acutely intense and impressive rhetoric of analogy. (This chapter has the most concentrated and breathtaking accounts of fighting in the entire book.)
6. Chapter 15, page 144, on the top, on Russians’ mixed feeling of the hate and fear towards German soldiers; Page 146, on the exemplary and unbending fortitude of the big majority of German POWs refusing to give in to the Russian demands in extremely adverse conditions.
7. Chapter 16, page 159, 167, the author’s sincere and deeply touching lamenting and reflection over the issue of war and humanity for the kind-hearted help he received from some Russian civilians on his escape route from the POW camp in Russia; Page 163, the author’s pertinent and truthful exposition of the ghastly atrocious crimes perpetrated against German civilians by East Europeans especially Czechs amid a rabid, morbid, and unjustified frenzy of hatred and vengefulness in contrast with the relatively much more decent and humane treatment of occupied peoples by German authorities based on well documented and demonstrable facts.
8. Chapter 17, page 178, the last paragraph, the author’s strong statement on the amazing achievement of the Transylvanian Saxon community in North America, pronouncing that “there are more doctors and professors per capita among the scattered Saxon than any other nation on earth”, to which I honestly feel half-believing and half-incredulous and which, if proven true, is undoubtedly an awesome and brilliant feat.

The book has 193 pages of writing including Foreword and Epilogue as well as 16 full pages of old pictures portraying the author in various military uniforms or civilian clothing from his childhood to post-war days and also those featuring his beloved families, friends and comrades. These pictures are largely quite clear and telling. All in all, a very good and interesting read! Five stars!

interesting story, but the book is marred by too many exaggerations

He fights in the Demiansk pocket, then he becomes a Gestapo agent, then again with the Wiking division in the fourth battle of Charkov, Cerkassy pocket (!), siege of Budapest (inside of the besieged city!!), battle of Berlin. Is there anyone who can really think this was possible ? (Yes, judging by the many 5 stars reviews...). He pretends having destroyed a dozen or so enemy tanks in close combat and, on one occasion, having shot down a few russian planes with a train-flak that the crew had deserted. What a pity, there are no pictures showing the author with combat decorations...
I really don't understand the author. His story would have been very interesting, but the book is marred by too many exaggerations and frivolous claims.
