Covers all the basics!

As the parent of an 8 year old with AS, I am constantly wondering if I am handling ALL the basic every day living skills. This book has it ALL! Social skills, interacting with people (community, school, and at home), and personal hygiene. The only chapter of the book, I felt didn't address the subject, was 11. My son had SO many questions as we read each story in that chapter. I guess that was good to some degree, we would then do some research to answer his questions. Some stories seemed so "common sense" when I first read them, but then I realized, what is common sense to me isn't common sense to a child with AS. I initially wanted to just quickly browse through this book when it arrived, but I found myself reading page after page for a little more than half an hour. My son and I are constantly picking up this book and going over stories together, even the ones he has already mastered. He enjoys the fact that he knows the answers, and every once in a while will add a tidbit. I find this book is great for the whole family to enjoy. This ia a must for any parent who has a child with AS.

Margherita Sarfatti first met Benito Mussolini in 1911 at the socialist daily Avanti! In what became a turbulent love affair she emerged as an important writer, art critic, and major adviser to the founder of the Fascist party. Even though she converted to Catholicism, she was cast aside once Hitler came to power and fled to South America in 1938.

During her long exile where she constantly feared for her children who had remained in Italy and were in danger during the war, Sarfatti decided to tell the story of her relationship with Mussolini and the role she played in many important Fascist artistic, cultural, and ideological issues until 1934. Most of Italy's modern architecture and many of its painters owe Sarfatti both their success and lasting legacy.

At first she wrote her memoir in English under the title My Fault. But in 1945 a daily newspaper in Buenos Aires, Critica, published a Spanish version in fourteen installments. In the full text Sarfatti bares all about her stormy relationship with the intensely womanizing dictator whom she knew was quite incapable of any kind of monogamous relationship. Yet the attraction remained long irresistible and that passion jumps off these pages with unrelenting strength.

Dr. Brian Sullivan is a leading authority on Fascist Italy. After earning a PhD at Columbia he taught at Yale University and at the U.S. Naval War College. The author of many articles he is with the late Phil Cannistraro the co-author of Il Duce's Other Woman (William Morrow, 1993) a major biography of Margherita Sarfatti. He lives in Rockville, Maryland.

MEMOIRS OF A REPREHENSIBLE WOMAN SCORNED

For all of her money and education Margherita Sarfatti hitched her future to a thug and then sold her soul to the devil. She met Mussolini when they were both in the Socialist phase of their lives. She attempted to polish this thug as much as she could, followed him to Fascism, raised money for his party, financed his life style, introduced him to influential people and wrote a book early in Mussolini's rise to power creating the image of Il Duce as Italy's new Caesar who would restore the country to the glory days of the Roman Empire. She was Mussolini's mentor, money lender, and longest running mistress all in one. He called her his
"mascotte." Mussolini became embarrassed by her as she became middle aged and because of her Jewish roots. He traded her in for a much younger model. She left Italy and eventually ended up in Argentina, where she wrote this series of articles about Mussolini for a publication in that country. Back in Europe her sister died on the way to Auschwitz, her daughter and grandchildren went into hiding. Now her heirs want all that to be forgotten and want to mention only her contribution to art.

Sarfatti comes across as an arrogant, classless, jealous, vindictive snob who belongs to the clique of the cool kids in the high school class. She is one of the mean girls. Sarfatti writes in a style that many times resembles a trashy pulp romance with some long haired muscled hunk on the cover. "She felt his eyes burn into her." Not a direct quote perhaps, but close enough to what is in her writing. She is vicious in her descriptions of Rachele Mussolini, described as an ignorant, coarse and vulgar peasant among other things, and her replacement, Clara Petacci, described pretty much the same way, with the addition of corrupt and venal, as she sold access to Mussolini. It can be like reading one side of a cat fight.

The book is annotated by Brian R Sullivan. He provides a glossary of characters in the Fascist history as well as an extensive bibliography in his notes to Sarfatti's text. These notes would seem to be vital as Sarfatti's memory either fails her completely in some places, she makes mistakes or she just misrepresents events to make her look better or more important than she was. On the knowledge of history spectrum I fall more on the ignorant side. However I have a few insignificant quibbles with Sullivan's comments. I think that Sullivan makes at least one mistake when he says somewhere that the Austrian Emperor Franz Josef only had one other brother, Maximillian. The Emperor had three brothers, all who died before he did. He also says that Mussolini's son-in-law, Galeazzo Ciano, escaped to Germany after the vote to remove Mussolini. It is true that Ciano ended up in Germany. However the impression that I got from other reading was that when Ciano and his family got on the plane that would get them to Germany they thought they were headed for Spain. They were pretty much hijacked as Hitler especially among others was anxious to have him shot. Ciano had not been completely happy with the alliance with Germany. Again, my low place on the History Intelligence Spectrum and ignorance of European titles took me twice to Google to check that the Baron Schulenburg mentioned by Sarfatti and enlarged upon by Sullivan was not the man ultimately executed in the aftermath of the assassination attempt on Hitler of July 20. And finally, in the Kindle edition of this book the footnotes are at the end of each chapter which makes it a bit of a bother to read them. Still, it is better than having them at the end of the book.

Sarfatti's articles are highly entertaining gossip and a diversion. Despite the title of the book, she takes little or no blame at all for Mussolini's rise to power and indeed blames many others for supposedly being spineless cowards for not stopping him. She makes Albert Speer look like St. Augustine. Her book and the comments of Sullivan offer some insight into the character, ethics and morals of a woman so close to one of the most powerful shapers of the century and the cost to her soul. However, the memoirs of a woman scorned might not be the best source for serious history.

Great gossip

I must say that I am prejudiced here. I have always considered Brian R. Sullivan the single best English language historian of Fascist Italy. I was not disappointed in this book.
MY FAULT is taken from a short “expose” written in the late 30’s and appearing later in the late 1940’s by Margherita Grassini Sarfatti. It is written by the Jewish Sarfatti, who was a mistress of Mussolini, primarily to get back at him when he started to mimic Germany with anti-Jewish laws in the late 1930’s – (see the movie THE GARDEN OF THE FINZI-CONTINIS). This thin book is well produced. It is illustrated with some unusual photographs of the period.
Sarfatti had a relationship with Musso from before World War One and was helpful in “educating” him so he could move among the upper class. She would later immigrate to South America. Sullivan uses each chapter to take a section of what she wrote, and then fills it out as well as correcting her when her memory is either wrong or selective. His footnotes on individuals mentioned are especially impressive – many of whom the English-speaking world is unaware of.
Sarfatti talks about his family, his mistresses, his syphilis, his relationship with Hitler, children and much more about Musso’s life. Sullivan deftly works through all of this with MANY supporting source footnotes, so one who can work in Italian can follow up. There is an element of this being a “gossip” column about MY FAULT, but it is both helpful and valuable.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

This is a book that will swallow you up with its inspiration. Each photo brings you to a different level of understanding in how we perceive nature in both it's delicate state and in it's surprising strength. There are revelations on each and every page that capture your attention. It is simply remarkable!

A TRUE MASTERPIECE

On a recent trip to Europe, I came across this BEAUTIFUL book.As a lover of flowers, I fell in love with the book, and upon returning home to America, I had to have it. Several more for gifts, too! It is a masterpiece.The book itself is a work of art, the photos inside are breathtaking.Ms. Hausler is a true talent,capturing rare beauty,creating unique photos and kind enough to share her inspiring photos with the world. I look very forward to her next book.

Mesmerizing!

Minh Hausler’s The Fusion of Flora and Art is filled with images that seem to energetically rise from the page with a remarkable ability to stimulate the mind. Each composition is a skillful juxtaposition of flora and inanimate components that together form an exquisite homage to nature. The visual impact ranges from the beautiful to the playfully idiosyncratic. The author choreographs a symphony of creative tension, exploration, and improvisation that I find captivating and open to reinterpretation. The images are dynamic as they induce a sense of movement and an appreciation for time and the ephemeral nature of existence. Each composition stands on its own as a work of art. The book is divided into chapters such as The Art of Momentum and In Search of Simplicity. Many images seem initially to be an invitation to meditate, but further observation stimulates curiosity, and then a sense of wonder. It took me less than a minute to decide to purchase this book based on the superb quality of the photographs, and four months later, I am still in the process of discovering it. This process is facilitated by the text. The author is a serious student of life and art. This book makes a beautiful gift (I have already gifted the book to two friends) and I have other friends who, upon reviewing my book, purchased their own copies. My appreciation for this work grows each time I revisit its pages.

A marvelous classic collection of stories

This is one of the great classics both of Chinese literature and of stories in general. Particularly notable are the many interactions between people and ghosts and people and foxes.
This is the early and still excellent Giles translation, but the newer one from Penguin is fleet and wonderful too.

About the Author

Greg Whyte, PhD, FACSM, is a professor of applied sport and exercise science at Liverpool John Moores University in London. As one of British sport's foremost research scientists, Whyte has worked as a consultant physiologist in a large number of Olympic and professional sports and is currently the science consultant for England FA (World Cup 2010), the Commonwealth Games Committee for England (Delhi 2010), and British Rowing. From 2001 to 2004, Whyte served as the director of research for the British Olympic Association based at the Olympic Medical Institute, where he established the Centre for Sports Cardiology, which is dedicated to the investigation and treatment of sport-related cardiac issues. Whyte is now the director of the Centre for Sports Cardiology at the Centre for Health and Human Performance.

A former international modern pentathlete, Whyte competed in two Olympic Games and won European bronze and World Championship silver medals. He studied for his BSc (hons) at Brunel University, completed his MSc in human performance at Frostburg State University in the United States, and completed his PhD at St. George’s Hospital Medical School and the University of Wolverhampton, where he was research coordinator. Whyte is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (FACSM) and was chairman of the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) from 1999 to 2009.

Sanjay Sharma, BSc (Hons), MD, FRCP (UK), FESC, was appointed consultant cardiologist and physician at University Hospital Lewisham and honorary senior lecturer in cardiology at Kings College Hospital London in 2001. In 2006 he took up the post of director of heart muscle diseases at Kings College in London and became professor of cardiology at St George’s University of London in 2009. Sharma is medical director for Virgin London Marathon, consultant cardiologist for the CRY sports cardiology clinic at St George’s Hospital, and cardiologist for the English Institute of Sport, the British Rugby League, and the British Lawn Tennis Association.

Sharma’s interests include cardiovascular adaptation in athletes, sudden cardiac death in the young, and heart muscle diseases, for which he has an international reputation and has published over 100 scientific articles, including original papers in highly rated peer-reviewed journals. Sharma was awarded the status of fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and elected as a nucleus member of the Sport Cardiology section of the European Association of Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Rehabilitation in 2008. Sharma leads the CRY screening program, which is the largest of its kind in the UK. Sharma has an active interest in medical education and is the lead tutor for the international teaching faculty for the Royal College of Physicians.

Knowing what's going on inside the body during exercise is a critical component of training. Many decades ago, the late Bruce Lee monitored his bodily functions in various ways while training. He, like other elite athletes, knew that it helps them perform at peak levels.

In this book, the reader is guided from theory to applied interpretation of normal and abnormal ECG traces.

"Exertion-related symptoms are the primary indication for exercise testing; however, it is also valuable in the assessment of functional and cardiorespiratory capacity, disease severity and prognosis, and pre- and postdischarge testing."

We've heard about athletes in the prime of their lives and careers collapsing while playing their sport and dying of an arrhythmia. From the book we read, "Exercise-induced arrhythmias can be determined by answering . . . questions to those posed when evaluating an ECG at rest: What is the atrial rhythm? What is the ventricular rhythm? Is the AV conduction normal? Are there any unusual complexes? Is the rhythm dangerous?"

The book is a reference for students and practitioners who work with exercise electrocardiograms (ECGs) and should be must-reading. It helps us here as trainers to answer heart related questions from adult trainees. A great medical basis for workouts, and goes along well with our CPR course. Highly recommend for those who are serious about exercise or the science of exercise.
