Angela Weinberger has written an amazingly helpful book for those in Global Transition (GT) consulting, for those in the business of sending, and for those receiving new Global Nomads. Global Mobility has changed from being for only the top levels of the management in their “training tracks” to moving highly skilled professionals, including specialists, all over the world.

Angela has put to pen the results of years of practical consulting experience in this field and has produced a tool that is a useful guide giving practical solutions for the GT specialist and the Global Nomad. The Global Mobility Workbook gives not just theory and trends but also concrete strategies and very helpful business cases for practical guidance for the GM trainers and coaches and other related people (HR departments, recruiters). I would add this is helpful for those Global Nomads who are moving with little or no company support.

Not only are the needs of the assignee addressed, but also the spousal experience is given equal importance in the workbook. This I find a key to success of the global assignment: the positive aspects of the spouse. There is also some focus on the requirements on competencies and career development of both the assignee and spouse.

I personally found a lot of helpful information in this book, first for the growing global mobility community and also for all who are involved in international assignments. For me this book is very empathetic and sensitive to the needs of all the people involved in a global transition. Although the book is quite compact (with its 93 pages) it contains a lot of helpful tables, templates, checklists, graphs, and statistical information. If you're interested or involved in Global Mobility this book is a "must have" for you.

Very helpful!

Arnaud Desjardins is a very great teacher. He's the one who brought Tibet and Tibetan Buddhism to the attention of the West with two excellent movies several decades ago. He's also the author of many excellent spiritual books. A disciple of Swami Prajñapad, Arnaud is recognized as having attained the goal of Indian spiriutality. Whether they believe in Hindu spirituality or not, thousands of westerners, and mostly French people - Arnaud is French and was a brilliant TV producer in France - have had their lives changed by his deep, simple words on spiritual life. He's a happy and humorous old chap, who embodies humility, wisdom and joy with a rare vitality! This book is one of his best books. RECOMMENDED!

I find it astounding and I believe it.

This writer/researcher gives us a glimpse of where our notions of a Democratic Republic comes from. If you are a Christian it will only cement your belief in Christ. The Templars do indeed still exist and they tend to be devote Christians. I truly like the historical rendition of this writing, a grand and great service to humanity

Fact or Fiction??

I was a bit disappointed with this book. If you're looking for a historically accurate piece pertaining to the knights of the Temple, then this is not the read for you. Much of the information doesn't exactly line up with what experts report, and some parts are just plain fictitious. I also believe this was written as a means to advertise his next book. Bottom line: Story; not History.

is more speculative than I thought

I originally bought this book because I thought it was going to be some factual history concerning the Knights Templar. What you get is writing that smacks of something Dan Brown would write. The big difference is Brown lets you know that he is writing fiction. Mr. Fedan, it seems would like you to believe that his speculations are based on facts, but clearly they're not.

He cites Elaine Pagels, but since I am familiar with her writing, I find he left most of what she said out.

He writes well, was entertaining, but shouldn't try to push his other book so hard while trying to get you to believe he is being factual.

He did do some research, and writes well, so I don't want to condemn his book entirely. Just remember that this is mostly fiction and to draw what you will from it.

About the Author
Daniel White Hodge (Ph.D., Fuller Graduate School of Intercultural Studies) is CEO of White Hodge Services, offering educational, consulting and speaking services surrounding issues of racial reconciliation, intercultural communication and urban culture. He is also lecturing professor at Eastern University and adjunct professor at Fuller Graduate Schools. A former music industry professional, he serves as a national trainer for the Christian Community Development Association (CCDA) and the Urban Youth Workers Institute (UYWI). Hodge is the author of Heaven Has a Ghetto: The Missiological Gospel and Theology of Tupac Amaru Shakur,and The Hostile Gospel: Finding God in the Post Soul Theology of Hip Hop.

The Intersection of Hip-Hop & Theology

I thoroughly enjoyed Hodge's treatise on a theology of Hip Hop Culture. It is clear that Hodge purposely stretches the traditional Christian reader and calls him or her to an engagement with Hip Hop that is rarely found in the church. I have the benefit of authentically viewing his work through both lenses, as a Christian student of the Scriptures as well as a product of the Hip-Hop Culture. As I read this book, I recited many of the lyrics that he cited and agreed with statements that I thought to myself in my college dorm room just a few years ago. I appreciated Hodge's willingness to say what few others would dare. As I read, I found several areas in which I completely agree and others where I am cautious to step out as far on the limb that Hodge is dancing on.

What I most appreciate about this book as that he gives the Hip-Hopper a soul and a voice. It's easy to dismiss these people as lost in their sin, but he gives them an unexpected "benefit of the doubt" However, I found that he may go a little too far by identifying Hip Hop artists such as Tupac Shakur and DMX as "prophets" by comparing their lyrics to the Biblical texts of Job and King David. While he makes his point well that the feelings of oppression and suffering are the same, I feel that the glaring difference is a commitment to the rule of God and the principles of repentance and belief that God requires and is evident in the Biblical texts that he sites. For example, Hodge sites Jeremiah 15:15-16 as the prophets ability "to connect with Hip-Hop's suffering contexts. (page 89)" However, in this text, Jeremiah clearly articulates that he has committed his cause to Yahweh. This cannot always been said of the "prophets" of the Hip-Hop culture.

He also, seemingly, reads more into hip-hop lyrics than are there. Clearly a Biblical scholar with strong understanding of Scripture and theology, it seems like Hodge reads and hears the lyrics of Hip Hop artists through the lenses of His own theology rather than through theirs. Therefore, a term or a phrase rapped by an artist such as Layzie Bone may sound more theologically sound than the rapper intended.

Hodge has an unspoken, assumed hierarchy of Hip-Hop. The "conscious" rap is spiritual, often prophetic and off-limits to scrutiny. The mainstream "party" rap is less important and open to rebuke from Christian authorities. I believe that it is difficult to delineate the two. Even Jay-Z, the self-proclaimed and community affirmed "Best Rapper Alive," affirms that the "party joints" are for the radio/mainstream so that he could gain the audience to bring the "conscious" rap on other tracks on the album. This is the current state of Hip-Hop and cannot be avoided, despite Hodge's best attempts.

Where I stand strong with Hodge is his call to the Church to listen to, understand and dialogue with the Hip Hop culture. There are several entry points, explained in the main chapters of his book, where Hip Hop and Christian Theology intersect. A consciousness of pain, community, Christ and justice are ever-present in Hip-Hop and are important talking points to engage Hip-Hop culture. The church should be more responsible to hold back it's condemnation long enough to hear the longing for God in each member of this generation, while not allowing truths to be re-defined in order to legitimize principles as Biblical when they are not.

It's a novel idea to write a book about these concepts. One that was very much needed but I think the author could have gone a lot further in providing more historical context of the oppression of Jews and how their writings reflected their struggles just as hip hop has, primarily for African Americans and many others around the globe. The paradox with this idea, though, is that most church people don't delve much into contextual history of the Bible or even see the Jews as an oppressed culture. Therefore, his message was light enough for his target audience (which I assume are evangelical churches and youth groups). If you're looking for something scholarly, this is not it.

The Soul of Hip Hop is thought provoking, deep and spot on! The message is a fresh and out of the box approach to the traditional "churchy" point of view. I love the way he presents the Hip Hop community as a people group. Daniel White-Hodge gives those who come from outside the 'hood a real look at the history and progression of this community not only from an analytical perspective but also from his personal experience. This book challenged me to think on a higher level and view the world from a deeper place in my heart and soul.
