Exceptional Book

I don't remember the first time I read this book, sometime in 1952 when I was 12 yrs old. This book was my most favorite book and I read it several times more through my early teens and again recently just to see if it felt the same in my later years. I've read other reviews that gave a 2 or 3 star and want to remind those folks that this book is written for children: the long description of household chores is teaching, the teasing that is sometimes very hateful, is met by children daily through their growing years and also later as an adult. Everyone must learn how to respond without whining their insult to anyone that will listen. Again, it is teaching that teasing or rudeness should be met with understanding. Martitia learned to give as well as receive. Such a valuable lesson. When I read this again recently, I, too, didn't like the long description of household chores simply because I have done them so many times in my 75 years; but I am so glad it is in the book for the young to read and see how it was done in the early days. To this day, I am fascinated by the methods used in the olden days. Martitia met heartache and grew into a exceptional young woman.

A good old fashioned story - you will love the family!

I found this book in my junior high library and read this book as a young teen many times. Over the years, I would look for a copy to read again, but never found it. I was so excited to see it offered on Amazon and promptly purchased my own copy. Read it through twice already! Such a sweet story celebrating generosity and the human spirit to overcome obstacles in life. I recommend this book for all women, young and old. It will bring a smile to your face as you read about young Martitia finding her way.

I read this book many years ago. One of my sisters owned it. And it was a favorite of hers AND another sisters! I am so glad to have a copy of this (I would call it a classic) Now someday my granddaughter can read it.
